Headcount update reminder
Due to an issue with the new addition asked for by the DfE therefore please put 38 weeks in for the census information (or the number of weeks the provider is open in term-time which could be less than 38 weeks, for independent schools for example). Please note this will not affect your payment, please claim the weekly hours as you would (unstretched for those on a stretched offer)and it will calculate it by the number of weeks in this term.

Local Area SEND Inspection
The Local Area SEND Inspection is an inspection of the services jointly provided by health, education and social care services within a local authority area. Inspectors from Ofsted and Care Quality Commission (CQC) hold the Local Area to account by reviewing how the Local Area meets their responsibilities for children 0-25 who have additional needs and disabilities.
East riding of Yorkshire was last inspected in 2021 and is, therefore, due a further inspection in the very near future.
Inspectors will visit a range of early years providers, education, health providers and specialist services within the local area. Although Ofsted inspectors will visit early years and education settings, they are not directly inspected as individual institutions. These visits will focus on the contribution of settings to the provision of support to children and young people with additional needs, as part of the overall partnership arrangements.
Inspectors will be looking for evidence of how children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities:
- are identified,
- how their needs are assessed and met and
- how they are supported to move onto their next stage of education, the world of work and wider preparation for adulthood
The inspection will take place over a 3-week period. During the first week, inspectors will identify individual children whose experiences they wish to track. Visits to early years providers, education, health and social care settings and health providers will take place within the 3rd week of the inspection.
Inspectors will discuss the Local Area’s SEND processes and experiences with:
- children and young people with SEND, their parents and carers
- elected members and senior leaders across the partnership
- practitioners and professionals from health, education and social care
- education, health and care providers
A member of the local authority Early Years Team will contact you at the earliest opportunity if a child at your setting is identified by the inspectors for tracking and you are required to provide input, or the inspectors wish to visit your provision.
Please follow the link below to view the full Local Area SEND Inspection quick reference guide on the SEND East Riding Local Offer.

Effective Environments for 2025: The Communication Friendly Spaces™ Approach, by Elizabeth Jarman
There are a few spaces available for this weeks training, so this is your last opportunity to take up this amazing free training offer. Elizabeth is a renowned speaker, and we have been extremely lucky to get a space in her diary.
Elizabeth's input is rooted in the work she has developed on environments over the last 20 years and will include a challenging but motivating overview of the evidence informed Communication Friendly Spaces™ Approach to inform considered short and long-term development, ensuring that environments created inside and out are responsive and set the scene to ignite high levels of engagement. Theory will be illustrated with lots of relevant imagery, case studies and examples of impact, to demonstrate how the principles underpinning the approach have been used in practice.
Key strands of Elizabeth's work will be highlighted:
- Connecting pedagogy and learner experience with the environment
- The emotional climate and using the environment to support secure transitions into, out of the setting and through the day, to establish a sense of familiarity, belonging and connection (personalisation of the environment/ families and wider community connection/ outward facing pedagogy)
- Maximising the use of space- developmentally appropriate spaces- social spaces- scales of space- physicality of learning
- Storage and resource management- reducing sensory overload
- Resources and materials available around the site- fascinations, sensory integration, open-ended, natural, re-purposed, diverse, authentic triggers
- The impact of noise and managing this
- Informed use of colour
- The effects of light
- The role of the adult
- Staff spaces
Elizabeth will look at your indoor and outdoor environment, but have you considered what it looks like for a child and their parent on their walk into your setting? are there provocations to spark conversation? All these points will be discussed, and how you can maximise you’re setting to its full potential.
The session is being run twice to maximise the number of people who can access this training by Elizabeth, there is no maximum number of people who can attend from each setting, so why not make it a team meeting and all come together.
