Youth Bus
A new youth bus will be running twilight youth sessions in Hessle and Howden over the summer holidays, as part of the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council, in partnership with Humberside Police, will be providing a range of fun activities for young people aged 11 and over on benefit-related free school meals. Outreach workers will lead activities from DJ workshops, multisport with Hull FC to street art workshops, dance workshops and wrestling in sumo suits.
The youth bus was developed as part of the Barnardo’s collaboration project with East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Voices Mean Choices. Young people, parents/carers and partners from a range of organisations were involved in the designing of the concept “Our Place” to offer a safe place for young people to come to.
Councillor Victoria Aitken, Cabinet Member for children, families and education said: “These sessions offer a fun, free way for young people to come together, in safe spaces.
“Young people have been involved in developing the youth bus concept and the designing of the bus, as well as the activities that will be running. Thanks to everyone who helped with this Our Place project and I know young people will enjoy all it has to offer this summer!” Inspector Matt Wilson said: “We are really pleased to be joining forces with the council to help deliver these fun and exciting activities over the summer holidays. “This is a great opportunity for young people to come together with friends and exercise, express themselves creatively and enjoy something to eat as well. It’s going to be a really fun summer and I hope to see lots of young people coming along and making the most of the brilliant sessions that are planned.”
Parents can book funded places for young people who are in receipt of benefits-related free school meals, and go to an East Riding school. There are also places on all programmes for pupils with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), regardless of their free school meal status. During the summer holidays, parents will be able to book up to 16 funded places. Food will be provided at each session.
