StreetScene clean-up team: less litter from this year's Ottery Tar Barrels
Before and after East Devon District Council's StreetScene team's clean-up of the streets of Ottery St Mary
The Ottery Tar Barrels event clean-up began at 5am on Wednesday 6 November 2024, with East Devon District Council’s StreetScene team working until dawn to get the town looking ship-shape.
This year's event marked a positive shift toward sustainability, with noticeable changes in litter levels. The community's cooperation in using reusable cups (introduced by the event organisers), and cleaning up after themselves, has played a big part in maintaining the town’s appearance after the event.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all eventgoers for their consideration and to Ottery St Mary residents for their patience with noise made by the early morning cleanup. The clean-up team also deserve special recognition for their commitment for an early start to the day.

Donate clothes from your kerbside
Good quality textiles and shoes, bagged and placed securely in your kerbside recycling box, will go to The Salvation Army for reuse or sale, which supports people in need.
East Devon District Council's scheme is a textile reuse scheme, rather than a recycling scheme, therefore as your textiles will be reused, it is important to keep them clean and dry.
We are unable to collect duvets, pillows, and cushions, please place those items in your wheeled grey refuse bin or take them to the recycling centre.
For those of you wondering if your textiles or shoes are of good quality for collection, we suggest, that if you ask yourself, ‘Would I buy this from a charity shop?’ If the answer is yes, then please place them out for collection. If not, then please place in your wheeled grey refuse bin, which will then go to the Energy from Waste Facility in Exeter.
During times of wet weather, you may wish to hang on to your textiles and put them out for collection in a drier period to ensure they don’t get wet, and are reusable.
Find out what you can recycle in East Devon, by visiting the A - Z search tool on the council's website.
