🤝 Households across Devon to receive financial support towards energy and food bills

The UK Government has announced further Household Support Funding until the end of March 2025 to help households that are struggling with the costs of energy, food, water and other essentials. Devon County Council works closely with district councils, including East Devon, as well as its voluntary and community partners, to distribute this funding.

🌊 Stay safe at the beach this Autumn and Winter

Lifeguard season over at East Devon's beaches

A big thank you to East Devon's RNLI lifeguards, who will be taking a well-earned rest until 2025, after a busy spring and summer.

If you see someone in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Don’t attempt to rescue them yourself. If you get into difficulty yourself, fight the instinct to panic, and float. Let a family member or loved one know if you're going into the water, and take a floatation device and a means of communication.

Check whether it is safe to swim

Across the UK, the Environment Agency tests bathing water quality from 15 May - 30 September. To make a more informed decision about whether to enter the water during the winter, check WaterFit Live and the Safer Seas & Rivers Service.

East Devon District Councillors passed a vote of no confidence in South West Water on 22 February 2024 and officers continue to work with the Environment Agency to hold the water company to account.

Dogs allowed back on beaches

Responsible dog walking is allowed on East Devon beaches between 1 October and 30 April. Thanks for ensuring that your dog is well behaved, kept on a lead if needed, and keeping the beach clean, so that everyone can enjoy being by the sea.

To allow water birds to feed after their long migrations from the Arctic and northern Europe, please keep dogs outside the area marked with buoys as the Exmouth Wildlife Refuge.

🌳 Help preserve East Devon’s treescape

East Devon District Council is pleased to propose five sites across the district for planting young tree whips. These trees will evolve into small copses, pocket woodlands, and a community Tiny Forest, creating a vibrant network of habitats.

This initiative not only enhances our environment but also provides numerous benefits for wildlife and our community.

The project is part of the Emergency Tree Fund, overseen by Devon County Council, and supported by funding from the Woodland Trust.

Have your say before 5pm on Monday 28 October 2024.

♻️Nights are closing in, check your torches

Plastic bag full of batteries

When recycling your batteries, please put them into a clear plastic bag before putting them in your recycling box for collection; a sandwich bag is ideal.  This helps East Devon's crews separate them out when emptying your recycling box.

Keeping batteries separate in the recycling vehicles and at the depot prevents fire risk. Please do not put your batteries inside a cardboard box or wrap them in paper, as they can get missed and mixed up with paper and cardboard in the recycling vehicle and at the depot.

If you're unsure of how to dispose of an item, use the search tool on the East Devon recycling webpages.

Unfortunately, we’ve experienced more than our fair share of flooding in East Devon in recent years. The council is committed to working with its partners to improve resilience and reduce the damage caused in the future, through solutions like the Feniton Flood Alleviation Scheme

Throughout Flood Action Week, beginning on Monday 14 October 2024, East Devon District Council will be raising awareness and encouraging everyone living in at-risk areas to take steps to protect their homes. Advice will be shared on social media channels including how to identify flood risks, creating personal flood plans, and accessing support.

Arts & Culture East Devon and Exmouth Festival are setting out a new blueprint to decarbonise local festivals.

Exmouth Festival organisers - Exmouth Town Council, wanted to understand the scale of their previous festival emissions and how to reduce it. By working with South West Energy and Environment Group, they created a bespoke calculator tool. It is unique to festivals, enabling them to calculate their carbon footprint, identify categories where reductions can be made and monitor changes going forward. These steps resulted in a 10% carbon reduction of this year’s festival, which is set to continue reducing year on year.
