Work to complete the £6m flood alleviation scheme for Feniton, designed to reduce the flood risk to 65 residential homes plus help prevent disruption to the primary school and local transport, will begin in the autumn.

This phase of the scheme is anticipated to take approximately 12 months to complete, with the works mainly taking place within fields around the village.

While the work is ongoing, some road and public area closures will be necessary. All affected residents are being consulted and where necessary, special access provided. The first road closure will be in Feniton’s Ottery Road starting in November and into December, when closures in Green Lane and Wells Avenue will also begin.

Why the Blue Flag is flying again on Exmouth seafront

Blue Flag, Exmouth June 2024

Exmouth seafront, June 2024

The Blue Flag is once again flying over Exmouth Beach as water quality has returned to qualifying levels. It has been 5 days since the pollution incident ended and no more sewerage has been released by South West Water in the intervening period.

The Blue Flag is more than a symbol of water quality; it represents a commitment to comprehensive beach management, waste management, accessibility, and environmental education. Achieving this status requires meeting strict international standards and has been awarded to Exmouth beach for each of the past 6 years.

East Devon Council’s officers are responsible for the overall beach management and are closely monitoring the situation in Exmouth to ensure the safety of the beach and the wellbeing of its users. The water pollution is out of the council’s control, but should any further pollution incidents arise, the Blue Flag will be immediately lowered until the situation is fully resolved.

For more information about Blue Flag and Seaside Awards, please visit the East Devon Council’s website under the Blue Flag and Seaside Awards - FAQs section.

Beach accessibility scheme extended

Accessible matting laid on Budleigh beach

Following successful trials at Seaton and Beer beaches over the last three summers, accessible track matting has been installed at:

  • The eastern end of Seaton beach
  • Sidmouth Town beach
  • Budleigh Salterton beach

Beer beach benefits from having track matting all year round.

The track matting creates a smooth path across the pebbles, making it easier for mobility scooter, wheelchair and pushchair users, and those who are unsteady on their feet, to access the beach.

The matting will remain in place until late September, before it is safely stored through the winter and returned next May.

Temporary arrangements for Maer Road Car Park this Bank Holiday weekend

Maer road car park

Maer Road Car Park in Exmouth will be partially closed this weekend to allow South West Water safe access to the Maer Lane pumping station whilst the repairs to the burst sewage main are carried out. The area of the car park shaded red, including the main entrance will be closed to the public and a temporary entrance will be available at the bottom of the car park.

There will also be up to 10 South West Water tankers parked at Estuary Coach and Lorry Park for the duration of the weekend.

The pipe repair will require continuous waste removal from the pumping station, and East Devon District Council will support South West Water during these essential works. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, and we will work with SWW and their contractors to minimise the ongoing disruption and ensure the safety of car park users.

GCSE success for our apprentice Will

Will, Arborist Apprentice

Yesterday Will our Arborist Apprentice received his GCSE results. Will chose to do an apprenticeship with East Devon District Council straight after completing his exams.

“Hi, I’ve been in this role for 6 weeks and am really enjoying it. I chose to do an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain experience, while working first hand on the job, gaining new knowledge and skills while getting to work in the outdoors.

The best part of the job is being able to work with and learn from a great team. I am also able to attend college and can gain a wider knowledge and skills in the arborist industry which I can do on the job and practice these. Most importantly I get to help, improve, and look after my local area.”

If you would like to find out more about working with the council, visit Careers - East Devon for our latest apprenticeship opportunities.

Festival fun for East Devon tenants

Tenants event - 22 August 2024

Yesterday we welcomed over 100 East Devon District Council tenants to enjoy a day of celebration and pride in their communities at our annual Tenants’ Festival.

The event at the Sid Vale Scout Hut in Sidmouth featured a great line-up of activities, like workshops, fun for the kids, a story tent, and even a birds of prey experience!

Tenants got the chance to connect with friends and neighbours from across the district and learn about the different ways we can support them to improve their neighbourhoods, including with community gardening projects and access to the Community Initiative Fund.

The headline act of the day was the Awards Ceremony, where prizes were given out for Neighbour of the Year, Young Person of the Year, Involved Tenant of the Year and Council Officer of the Year.

Thank you to our Communities Team, and the sponsors Ian Williams and Liberty Gas, for organising the event. You can find out more about getting involved with the Housing Service on our website.
