East Devon shines at regional small business awards
The Economic Development team at East Devon District Council have been awarded the prestigious ‘best in the West’ title for its support for the local small business community – as well as making the shortlist in the national awards category.
Over 250 councils nationally entered the inaugural Local Government awards run by the Federation of Small Businesses and the £2.1m Innovation and Resilience Fund scooped the ‘Future Ready’ category prize. Judges were impressed by the success of the scheme in helping businesses emerge from the pandemic, recover and deliver innovative projects of value to the district’s economy and local employment. East Devon also made the shortlist for the ‘All Round Small Business Friendly’ award for our EastDevonly campaign.
Sue Wilkinson, FSB Development Manager for Devon, said she was delighted that East Devon had won one of the four regional awards on offer: “The team at East Devon work hard to support small businesses and I am absolutely delighted that this work has resulted in them winning the FSB South West ‘Future Ready’ category and being recognised for their work in the ‘All Round Small Business Friendly’ category too. It’s a fabulous result especially considering huge number of councils they were competing against!”

The vacancy has arisen following the death of Cllr Val Ranger, the vice-chair of the council, who died on August 2 after a battle with cancer.
Three candidates are standing:
Chris Burhop (Independent) - the current chair of Newton Poppleford Parish Council
Paul Carter (Conservative)
Caleb Early (Labour)
The winning candidate will serve for six months, as the whole council will be up for election in May 2023.

As we approach the winter season with Halloween, bonfire night and Christmas, we get more food waste than at any other time of the year.
The best thing to do with food is to eat and enjoy it, however, even the most diligent shoppers and best cooks will always have some unavoidable food waste.
To make recycling your food waste easier and cleaner, line your caddy with any plastic bag; residents tell us that bread bags and the liners to cereal packets are their food caddy liner favourites!
Please make sure you use your blue food caddy to recycle your unavoidable food waste. It is a very valuable resource which, once collected, we use to generate green energy and produce bio-fertiliser for farms.

Come along to our winter remedies workshop
-
Medicinal Herbalist Maggie's workshop aims to enable an understanding of why and how we get ill in the winter, how a herbalist’s approach to treatment differs from that of conventional medicine, and which plant medicines can be made at home, in order to help prevent us getting ill, or to ease symptoms if we do
The workshop will include practical demonstrations of three simple remedies that can be taken for colds and flu, and there will be tastings, information sheets, recipe sheets and a list of useful books and online resources.

New winter fire safety campaign from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service
We have just launched our winter fire safety campaign called ‘Save safely’ – read our news article about the campaign. We’ve created this campaign in response to the cost-of-living crisis, to encourage people to think about fire safety when it comes to saving money.
We’re focusing on three main things to help keep people safe.
1. Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
You should have working smoke alarms on every level of your home, and a carbon monoxide alarm in every room where fuel is burned (this includes gas cookers, open fires, and log burners).
2. Use heaters safely.
Keep them at least one metre (3.3ft) away from everything. Never dry clothes on heaters.
3. Avoid using candles.
If you must use them, put them in proper fire retardant holders, and keep away from anything that could catch fire.
We plan to send out our next bulletin on Friday, 28 October 2022.
Please forward this email to anyone you think would find it useful and encourage them to sign up.
