What changed in 2022 for MOT testing

We wanted to reflect on the changes and improvements that have been made this year. For MOT testing we updated the MOT manuals, improved our digital services and celebrated the highest number of testers completing their annual assessment on time.

January to April

In January we introduced a new status page for our MOT digital services, including MTS and MOT reminders. The new page shows real-time information for the services and whether any of them are not operational due to maintenance work or incidents.

MTS status page

In March we published our review of the AEDM role. We made changes to the position so it’s clearer what the AEDM is responsible for.

And in April we celebrated the highest number of MOT testers completing their annual training and assessment. Over 97% of you completed it before the deadline. We also made some improvements to MTS to allow AEs to check whether their testers had completed their assessment.

During the same month, we also introduced basic disclosure checks for some MOT testers, including all newly qualified MOT testers. A basic disclosure certificate
(also known as a DBS check) needs to be provided before a demonstration test can be carried out.

We also introduced new offsite reviews and carried out research with MOT garages on connected equipment.

September

In September, we introduced an improved and easier way to book MOT demonstration tests online.

October to December

In October we ran a campaign to tell motorists about new features added to our MOT reminders and MOT history services. It's now easier for motorists to view and amend their MOT reminders as well as access and print their MOT certificates.

We also published a blog post by Nikola Coleman, one of our service designers, who shares the process behind these improvements.

Continuing the work into 2023

We couldn't have made these changes without your help and support, so thank you from everyone at DVSA. We look forward to building on this work in the new year.
