Staff Achievements and Reward Scheme (STARS) is open to all Devon Highways staff
The STARS Environment category is ideal to nominate our teams and colleagues. Has someone you know demonstrated an outstanding contribution to caring/managing our environment, and/or our natural resources? Take the opportunity to recognise a colleague/team for the work they do? If you are unable to access the STARS webpage please download the nomination form and email or post it back.
Compliments
Please see below a selection of compliments that we have received recently, well done to all those involved;
Hemerdon Lane, Hemerdon
Yesterday Devon Highways came to carry out a lengthy patching job from the phone box to Windwhistle Farm. As you know, I was a lifetime Blue Circle Cement man so not competent to comment on the tecnicallities. However, I can comment on the team;
Well organised, varying activities co-ordinated
Hard working
Safe signage
Cheerful, friendly and co-operative over vehicle movements
Hope you can pass this on to those who normally get the stick!
Andy Cole - Great West Run 2015
In November 2013, I embarked on a lifestyle change that has seen me lose 7 stone (100lb), or 44kg in new money, drop several sizes and become far more active (photo included). Without the support and encouragement of my family and friends I am sure I would not have achieved so much.
In 46 years I always thought that sport was for watching and the participation was something reserved for others. But this year I wanted to set myself a new challenge and I have started exercising and running on a regular basis, as a result I have also entered the 13 mile Great West Run around the streets of Exeter, this October.
Unfortunately there has been a recent spate of data protection issues within the service. Two of the issues are still to be fully investigated and no doubt more recommendations which will require action will be required. However we are required to implement a number of actions
The article is a formal instruction to all staff and I will seeking confirmation that the instruction has been complied with in due course. Therefore, if you need further advice, please contact me sooner rather than later.
Many Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Laura Gadd - Performance Manager

On the 1 September 2015 the Business & Customer Management Team will no longer operate from the Ryefields depot. Existing staff have been relocated to Lucombe House. Therefore, there will no longer be a public reception at this location.
Also as of the 1 September 2015 the reception area, at the Civic Centre in Barnstaple, will be closed to members of the public. For details on how our customers can contact us please see our poster.
Future Highways Contract and HMEP
On Friday 21 August 2015, a bidders day event for the future highways contract was held at Fingle Glen. The event was jointly managed by representatives of Somerset County Council, Plymouth City Council as well as ourselves. The day was well attended by contractors and representatives from the possible future supply chains.
The Information Governance Team have put together a useful guide as to how we should handle requests for information from members of the public.
Skips and Scaffolds
Please be aware that the Skips and Scaffold Team do not carry out any co-ordination checking when processing applications.
The team are not trained to perform this duty and it is therefore the responsibility of the Neighbourhood Officer, who is approving the licence,e to check for co-ordination issues using roadworks.org before confirming approval.
The Skips and Scaffolds Team are not part of the Highway Services Team (HST).
Co-ordination and inclusion on the streetworks register will be part of the package when the new WDM skips and scaffold application system is introduced.
This month we say congratulations to........
The following members of staff who have successfully secured positions in the new highways structure:-
Debbie Mitchell - Highway Services Team Manager (Barnstaple)
Steve Pickard - Highway Services Team Manager (Exeter)
Congratulations to last month's winner, Karen Armstrong, who correctly answered that 43% of complaints were dealt with at first point of contact during the period 1 - 20 July. A chocolatey treat is on its way!
