Packed out play sessions, a new calendar of fitness classes and lots of fabulous feedback - they have all kick started the new era of one of Maryport’s most prominent attractions.
The reopening of Maryport Activity Centre has been marked with a Valentine’s Day ribbon cutting, bringing together the partners who have transformed it into a bigger, brighter destination on the town’s historic harbourside. The event kickstarts a week of celebrations at the centre including free sessions and family activities.
Children from Grasslot Infants School were invited along to try out the new facilities, along with former Netherhall School student Taylor Stables who was the person who came up with the new name for the building which was formerly known as The Wave. Young people in Maryport were consulted to see if they thought there was a title which better represented the venue’s future.

We have been awarded over £1.3 million for active travel, securing vital investment to enhance walking, wheeling, and cycling infrastructure across the Cumberland area.
The funding, allocated by Active Travel England (ATE) as part of a £300 million national initiative, could enable the delivery of high-quality active travel schemes designed to make every day journeys safer, easier, and more accessible.
With our through the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the award-winning community archaeological dig, Uncovering Roman Carlisle, returned to Carlisle’s Roman Bathhouse from this Saturday and will go on into March.
As part of the pilot scheme to bring long term unemployed residents in Cumberland back into the workforce, there will a two-week training dig at Carlisle Cricket Club to discover more of the remaining mysteries of the site. This will be held between Saturday 15 February and Saturday 1 March 2025. This dig is open to anyone to volunteer.
Using Carlisle’s spectacular archaeology, a group of candidates have begun to train and learn about the basics of archaeology and tourist guiding. The training is intended to use archaeology as a way of providing a number of transferable skills and raise customers awareness of jobs in heritage. The programme has been designed for Cumberland residents who have been out of the workforce and are looking to gain experience in not only archaeology, but also transferrable skills that could be applied to many different jobs and in any customer facing role to get back into work.

The Early Careers and Apprenticeship team had an exciting National Apprenticeship Week, engaging with young people across Cumberland and showcasing fantastic opportunities.
The week began with a well-attended Apprenticeship Open Evening at Cumbria House on Monday 10 February, where visitors explored apprenticeship pathways at Cumberland Council.
Special events in Workington and Carlisle focused on Care Experienced young people, in partnership with the Virtual School, Children’s Services, Cumbria Youth Alliance, and Inspira.
The team also partnered with Inspira for speed interview prep at Richard Rose Morton Academy and visited Lakes College in Workington with two of our amazing apprentices to promote career opportunities.
We have some further good news, following the damage caused by Storm Éowyn with recovery work now completed on The Sands Centre, Carlisle
The temporary canopy installed as part of the RAAC replacement on the Sands’ auditorium roof was damaged and since then Cubby Construction, working on behalf of Cumberland Council, has been safely removing the damaged scaffolding and canopy steel work.
The Sands Centre in Carlisle reopened to leisure customers on Tuesday, 4 February and The Sands Centre car park also reopened on the same day.
Following the completion of the recovery work, the Swifts car park and footpath adjacent to the Swifts car park reopened on Saturday 15 February. A small area of the car park will be cordoned off (around five bays) but access will be as normal.
Keep Britain Tidy honoured environmental champions at its annual Network Awards in Liverpool recently. The event, held at the Crowne Plaza, brought together over 100 local authority leaders, housing associations, and land managers to discuss ways to tackle waste, litter, and fly-tipping.
Among the winners was our Public Spaces team, which received the Environmental Action Award for its street cleaning and enforcement efforts. Other winning initiatives included an alien-themed digital game encouraging park use and a council app rewarding sustainable actions.
And a lady fined for dog fouling
A dog owner in Maryport has been fined after being caught on CCTV failing to clean up after her pet. Our enforcement team traced the individual and took action—because everyone deserves clean streets and parks!

Landlords can benefit from a wealth of free training.
We are providing the training to property landlords in the area, with the support of the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA).
The course will be held on 4 March 2025 from 9.30am-1.30pm at Allerdale House, Workington.

An election is to be held for the Ennerdale and Kinnerside parish council. The number of councillors to be elected is two.
