February 2024
A message from Alan Bingham
Dear team,
We are now nine months into the construction of the new Carlisle Southern Link Road and progress is well underway.
Our key focus currently is with the structures and associated drainage works, where there has been significant progress. Some recent achievements include:
- Progress with the construction of the reinforced concrete piers and east abutment of the Caldew Crossing.
- Installation of formwork for the Peastree Farm accommodation bridge deck.
- Construction has commenced on the bridge piers for the West Coast Main Line and the Durdar road bridges.
- Completing another large surface water culvert.
- Completing the capping on the Brisco roundabout.
Throughout February there has been progress in the following areas contributed by many of you:
- Continuing with drainage works.
- Commencing with the lime modification of excavated material.
- Completing the concrete pours for the abutments of the Durdar road bridge and installation of the beams.
- Continuing on works associated with the West Coast Main Line bridge.
As part of our multi-million-pound investment in the infrastructure of the Carlisle Southern Link Road, we are equally as committed to invest in our local communities. We are working with our partners to ensure we add social value back into the county. Activities in February included:
- 'Your road to a better future' which sees us working with Inspira and the Job Centre offering support to local people interested in working within the construction industry. Find out more later in the newsletter.
- Delivering a week long 'Dream Placement' as part of the Centre for Leadership and Performance's programme. Find out more about the placement later in the newsletter.
- Attendance at the Petteril Community Panel Network event to provide an update on our progress to the local community.
Stay safe and well.

CSLR team visit Banagher Precast Concrete
Last week, Gareth Scott and Natalie Galloni-Cosgrove from Cumberland Council and Andrew Leech from Galliford Try paid a visit to Banagher Precast Concrete. During the visit, the team were able to see the ongoing production of some of the precast concrete beams for the Carlisle Southern Link Road.
It was great to meet some of the Banagher team, review their process and see the beams out of their mould, and being prepared for delivery.
Thank you to everyone involved so far!
Dream Placement 2024
During February half term week, many of you were involved in showing our Dream Placement students what its like to work in a range of departments on the CSLR project.
The Centre for Leadership's Dream Placement programme is unique from other work experience programmes as it takes students through a full application and interview process with the placement focussing on developing leadership skills.

The week begun with Kacper, Joseph and Owen spending time with Gareth, William, Kerri and Alan from Cumberland Council learning about the council structure and the CSLR project overall.
They then spent time with Phil, Becca, Mike and Andy from Galliford Try learning about their role as a principal contractor, the importance of health and safety on site and took part in a planning task. |
Next they spent time with Kieron, Grant and Ryan from Peacock Precision Services learning more about modern civil engineering surveying techniques.
The students also had the opportunity to ask the team about their career pathways to date which was very useful.

The students then spent the day with Dylan and Richard from WSP. Dylan, a Civil Engineer at WSP, gave the students a fantastic overview of his career journey to date and showcased the range of diverse opportunities available within the Civil Engineering industry. The students then took part in several design based tasks and had a go themselves using 2D and 3D design software.
|
Thursday saw the students enjoy a day touring the full Carlisle Southern Link Road site with Steve and Robbie from the Cumberland Council team.
The students were able to see the full breadth of the scheme all the way from Newby West roundabout to M6 Junction 42.
They then spent time with the team from Story Contracting and Barrett's who are building the bridge structures and learnt more about the engineering and project management elements which are involved in a project of this scale.

The week concluded with our students reflecting and summarising their experience. To showcase this, they delivered a presentation on specific work tasks they had been involved with throughout the week to Cumberland Council's Chief Executive, Andrew Seekings and Director of Business Transformation & Change, Jo Atkinson and colleagues from the service areas they were based with.
A big thank you to everyone who was involved in delivering this year's Dream Placement programme!
CSLR Inspira Programme - 'Your Road to a better future'
This month, in our ongoing commitment to making a positive social impact, our Galliford Try Social Value team has entered into a meaningful partnership with Inspira, a local charity dedicated to personal development. Together, we've proudly launched a new initiative, the CSLR Inspira Programme, aptly titled 'Your Road to a Better Future'.
The primary aim of this programme is to equip and empower local residents in Carlisle, providing an avenue for them to secure stable, long-term construction employment within Galliford Try.
Not only does this initiative present them with a chance to gain employment, but it also allows these individuals the unique opportunity to leave a tangible, lasting mark on a project that contributes to the development of their local community.
Over a period of four weeks, the participants of this programme will be engaged in an enriching and educative experience. They will receive support to enhance their CVs, develop their interview skills, and gain real-world experience through an onsite work placement with us. This is an invaluable opportunity for them to learn from our experienced team members and develop a thorough understanding of the construction industry.
We want to take this opportunity to express our gratitude in advance for any support that you may be able to offer to these candidates during their time with us. As they navigate the challenges and rewards of life on site, your guidance will be instrumental in their development. We are hopeful that this initiative will provide participants with not only practical skills but also open up a world of long-term employment opportunities for them.
For more information regarding this programme, please feel free to reach out to Becca Wood.
National Apprenticeship Week
During the recent National Apprenticeship Week celebration, we had the unique opportunity to interview and film some of our most dedicated and outstanding apprentices, all of whom are part of our contractors' teams.
Their individual experiences and journeys shed light on their personal and professional growth, and these stories were nothing short of inspiring.
Their stories highlighted the pivotal role that apprenticeships play, not only in shaping the futures of young individuals eager to launch their careers but also in fostering the growth of the construction industry.
To share these compelling narratives with a wider audience, we took the initiative to post the video of these interviews on our social media platforms. The video was very well received by our online community.
If you haven't had the opportunity to watch this insightful video yet, you can do so via this link.
We extend our gratitude to our apprentices for their willingness to share their stories. Their contributions go beyond their daily work—they are shaping the future of our industry, one project at a time.
For more information, please do not hesitate to contact Dana Kangben.
Thank you and well done!
In this month's edition, we would like to dedicate a special thank you to Rick Hunter. Rick, a dedicated professional from a local contractor, has been doing an outstanding job across the entire site.
Rick dutifully maintains our roads, ensuring they are clear and safe for all. He also tends to our drains, ensuring they run smoothly, and our manholes, which he keeps in pristine condition. His commitment to his work is truly commendable.
We extend our deepest thanks to Rick for his continuous hard work. He significantly contributes to the smooth running of our operations, making the jobs of everyone else on the team that much easier. We are truly grateful for your service, Rick!
World Book Day
World Book Day is just around the corner, and we're excited to celebrate this special day on 7 March in a unique way. As part of our commitment to fostering a love for books and shared reading, we're launching a book collection in our main office.
This initiative isn't just about celebrating books; it's about changing lives. The power of a good book goes beyond its pages, and we want to share that joy with as many people as we can.
The collected books will be donated to local schools, hospices, and libraries. It's a wonderful opportunity for your pre-loved books to find a new home and contribute to the spread of knowledge and love for reading.
For more information, please reach out to Becca Wood.
