Keeping Children Safe in Education (2019) states that, "Safeguarding incidents and/or behaviours can be associated with factors outside the school or college and/or can occur between children outside the school or college. All staff, but especially the designated safeguarding lead (and deputies) should be considering the context within which such incidents and/or behaviours occur."
This is called 'contextual safeguarding' and is becoming more and more of a priority in safeguarding our children. The Coventry Safeguarding Children Partnership have created a 'One Minute Guide' to contextual safeguarding and this can be downloaded here.
See also the Contextual Safeguarding Network for further information, training resources and advice.
There are a number of courses being delivered by the Coventry Safeguarding Children Partnership over the course of the Spring term.
Public Health are running a number of courses around safeguarding issues relating to health over the course of this term. Several of the courses are aimed at frontline practitioners, such as those working in schools.
Positive Parenting have a range of support services for families. Please see the latest brochure, including a new course that is specifically for fathers. There is also a new referral form here to use if you would like to refer a family in need of support.
We have had positive feedback from a school that has attended Mental Health Awareness Training through Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families. They are offering free mental health awareness training to mainstream secondary schools, secondary free schools, pupil referral units and sixth form colleges, if they have not already undertaken Mental Health First Aid training. For more details and to book a place, visit their website.
If you have any questions or queries about safeguarding, please contact Elizabeth Kent, Safeguarding in Education Adviser.
