Ending Physical Punishment in Wales

Ending Physical Punishment in Wales

The Children (Abolition of Defence of Reasonable Punishment) (Wales) Act 2020 will come into force on Monday 21 March 2022. The Act will prohibit the physical punishment of children in Wales by abolishing the defence of reasonable punishment.

Watch the video: Ending Physical Punishment in Wales

As a childcare provider in Wales in line with the relevant regulations and National Minimum Standards, you already comply with legislation that ensures;

  • physical punishments, or the threat of them, are never used
  • children are never shaken, smacked, humiliated, shouted at, intimidated or shamed
  • adults do not use any form of physical intervention, e.g. holding or restraint, unless it is necessary to prevent personal injury to the child, other children or an adult, or serious damage to property. Any incident is recorded and the parent informed of the incident on the day

You need to be aware of the changes to support partnership with parents and to ensure you have reviewed your policies and procedures’ in relation to safeguarding/child protection and behaviour management in particular.

Visit the Welsh Government website for further information.

Gold Standard Healthy Snack Award

Healthy Snack

The food and drink offered in childcare settings plays an important role in the health of children and can help develop good eating habits to set them up for the best start in life.

Childcare practitioners and early years settings play an important role in contributing to the welfare of growing children.

Snack times are an important opportunity for children to develop their communication skills, independence and numeracy.

The Gold Standard Healthy Snack Award (GSA) is an excellent way for you to show you are committed to supporting the children, families and communities you work with to eat well.

The award helps show that you are meeting the Food and Nutrition for Childcare Settings: Best Practice Guidance (Welsh Government, 2018).

The standard also helps meet the CIW standards and allows parents and carers to feel confident that their child is getting good nutrition in your setting.

More information and resources are available in the following documents:

All children aged 2 and 3 years old on 31 August 2021 are eligible for a free flu vaccination in the form of a nasal spray. However, not all parents are aware of this or take up the offer.

Staff working in the early years sector can help raise awareness of the programme amongst parents. You can print and download this poster to display in your setting or order free of charge from the Public Health Wales website.

This might include play practitioners within playwork, childcare workers, early years workers, youth workers, and other professionals who use play in other contexts such as hospitals, prisons, refuges or, residential care, where play for children is facilitated.  The Welsh Play Workforce Survey is open to both paid and voluntary people who work within the play workforce in Wales.
