On April 12, DAS leadership made the call to distribute a press release calling on the community to help us alleviate our large dog capacity concerns. The community response was overwhelming. Since the publication of the release, 256 dogs have been adopted, 65 sent to foster and 40 have been pulled by rescue groups. We are so proud of our Dallas community and even more impressed by our staff's ability to rise to the occasion and provide excellent customer service during the rush of adopters and fosters into the building. Special thanks to the adoptions, behavior, foster, rescue and kennel care teams for going the extra mile last week.
We want to thank each and every DAS employee for stepping up to the challenge and helping us save hundreds of lives in the process. Thank you for your hard work!

On Monday Jordan Craig, Executive Director of Spay Neuter Network (SNN), will share information about the programs they have developed to support the human-animal bond, increase access to care and decrease pet surrenders to the area shelter through case management and support through innovation and collaboration. SNN serves the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and surrounding counties and has been working to eliminate pet overpopulation through spay/neuter, while collaborating with communities to care for dogs and cats since 2004.
Saving the Smallest: Optimizing Neonatal/Pediatric Kitten & Puppy Care in Shelters

We all know how difficult this period of care can be for shelters and their foster families. This interactive webinar will give participants actionable steps to help improve the care provided to neonatal/infant puppies and kittens in their shelter and foster homes. After this webinar, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the developmental milestones for puppies and kittens from birth to 8 weeks and recognize what is “normal”
- Identify the most common causes of neonatal mortality and steps that can be taken to minimize the risk
- Create foster care protocols that optimize live outcomes for neonatal puppies and kittens
- Shelter medicine staff and anyone in the shelter who works with fosters or recruits fosters will benefit from this session.
This session is part of the Shelter Medicine series, a collaboration between the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement.
This live and recorded program is approved for:
1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit
1 CE towards ACO CE requirements per Ch. 829 of the Texas Health and Safety Code by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS)

Our temporary photographer Nicole has been working so hard these past several weeks to get beautiful pictures of the dogs we have available for adoption. She even helped us guide some of the press photographers through our shelter during last week's media blitz. Furthermore, she has jumped in several times when we have been particularly busy to show dogs for adoption and helped them find their new homes. We're so grateful to have Nicole here to help our animals show their best selves!
The kitten nursery staff has done a fantastic job caring for the orphaned kittens in our care. They are working with the most fragile animals in the shelter and every day they provide the critical round-the-clock care that neonatal kittens require. Shoutout to Beverly Veloz, Stormy Baker, Juan Valencia, Julia Esparza and Monica Aceves! In fact, until last week Monica had been handling the night shift solo since we opened the Kitten Nursery on April 1. Monica works hard to ensure that the kittens are cared for even in the wee hours of the night and we're so grateful she took on this challenge. Congratulations to the entire kitten nursery team for providing a shining example of compassion and quality care!
When a resident who is deaf came to our shelter with a stray dog they had found, Ina used her expertise in sign language to communicate effectively with them! While waiting for Ina to return from her break, Burnett Woods assisted the resident with communication via written word to ensure that they were being helped in a timely fashion. Thank you both for providing excellent customer service!

 DAS will be hosting a free microchip clinic for City of Dallas residents on Saturday, April 23 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at our main shelter at 1818 North Westmoreland Road. Walk-ins welcome, but appointments encouraged as supplies are limited. Make an appointment here.

Spay Neuter Network is partnering with Operation Kindness and Dallas Animal Services for a Free Microchip, Distemper/Parvo and Rabies Vaccine clinic. Free vaccines are for DOGS ONLY. Other vaccines, Heartworm tests, and preventative medication will be offered at our low-cost prices.
