Help employees get their July–December service credit

Employees need to wait to terminate until after December 16, 2025

School employees have special rules that enable them to take summers off and still earn service credit for a whole year.

If you have employees who plan to terminate or take an unpaid break in December, make sure they know that they need to work until December 16 or later to get their full service credit for July through December 2025.

To understand more about how school employees earn service credit, read the article “December Reporting: How to Ensure Service Credit for Summer Months” in the December Employer News

Work from September 15 through December 16 to earn July-December

Service credit: Also called retirement credit or creditable service, service credit is the number of years and months for which a PERS member earns retirement credit throughout their career. The number is used to determine when a PERS member can retire and to calculate their pension amount at retirement.

Work: Employer-paid time off (e.g., sick leave, vacation, holiday) counts as work time.

December 16: If your school winter break begins before December 16 and you have employees who will not be paid or employees who plan to terminate after break starts,  meaning they will be unpaid for more than half of December, contact your ESC representative
