Hello Friends,
I hope this finds you and your family well. It has been a busy few weeks in the District and around the state.
Many of you received my Press Release last week calling for the repeal of Measure 110, to save lives while giving our law enforcement officers the tools they need to protect our communities and their residents. You can view that Press Release here.
I appreciate the County Commissioners, Sheriffs, District Attorneys and my legislative colleagues of Coos, Curry and Douglas Counties for their desire to repeal Measure 110 as well. Douglas County Sheriff Hanlin and Commissioner Freeman were recently on KQEN in Roseburg speaking about the need for repeal. You can listen to their interview here.
Rotary Club of Gold Beach
As a long time former Rotarian, I appreciate what our local Rotary Clubs do for our communities and around the world. I had the opportunity to speak to the Gold Beach Rotary Club, give them a legislative update and answer some of their questions.
Conservative Conversations in Winston
I was able to join Representatives Wright and Goodwin, Douglas County Commissioner Freeman, Douglas County Clerk Loomis and members of the Umpqua Valley Republic Women to speak about issues facing our communities in Douglas County and where we need to go as a state. I appreciated the opportunity to join them and my colleagues, and I look forward to our continued work together for our residents and their communities.
Oregon Republican Party Convention
After joining the Joint Interim Committee on Addiction and Community Safety (the new Measure 110 Committee) I headed to Pendleton for the Oregon Republican Party Convention that is held every two years. Thank you to all of our PCP's that attended and the ORP Leadership Team, I appreciate all of your work across our state. It was great to see some of my colleagues there as well and I want to thank House Republican Leader Helfrich for his impassioned words. I want to also thank Chairman Hwang for allowing me the privilege to preside over the afternoon platform convention. Finally, I was able to join former Alaska Governor and Vice Presidential Nominee Sarah Palin for dinner. She was a delight and I appreciated her kind words and the ability to have some Q&A with our attendees.
Meeting with our Contractors
I enjoyed meeting with some of our southern Oregon members of the Associated General Contractors. Our contractors play a pivotal role in our communities. From housing to highways, utilities to buildings of all sizes, this industry is a critical economic driver for our district and across our state. Thank you for the opportunity to discuss the issues facing the industry, ways we can help in the legislature and how we can move our communities and Oregon forward.
More to come on our push to fulfill the overwhelming majority of Oregonians desire to repeal Measure 110 to save lives and give our law enforcement officers the tools they need to protect our residents and their communities, as well as Wood Products, Oregon Business & Industries and work in and around the district.
As always, thank you for the privilege and honor to work for you in the Oregon State Senate. Be safe and God Bless you, your family and your neighbor.
Yours Truly,
Senator David Brock Smith
