Dear Colleagues,

We hope you were able to enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation this summer. Dr. Charlene Williams, Director of the Oregon Department of Education, said it best, "There’s something truly special about the energy and excitement that fills our schools at the start of the year—a feeling of hope, possibility, and a fresh start."

We are grateful for your dedication and commitment to comprehensive school counseling programs and to the students and families you serve. Welcome back, and thank you for the difference you will make during this school year!

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a month dedicated to honoring those lost to suicide, supporting those struggling with suicidal thoughts, and raising awareness about mental health. It's an opportunity to share resources and work together to prevent suicide. During September, and throughout the year, we can care about suicide prevention; connect to community, culture, data, and research; and collaborate with others.

For more information, visit the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC): Each year, the SPRC creates a resource full of ways to get involved in Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Here is the resource list for 2024!

Call to Action for Schools - coming soon!

Joint communication between Lines for Life, Oregon Health Authority, Oregon Department of Education and the University of Oregon will be sent out to districts in an effort to highlight resources to support administrators, mental health school staff, students and families. It will include Transformative SEL as a universal practice that helps foster belonging.

Check out ODE’s September Education Update newsletter which provides additional resources for identifying distress and chronic stress in students, as well as suicide prevention resources.

Career Connected Learning (CCL) Resources

This is a great time of year to review the CCL resources available, for free, to support Oregon’s learners. Two sites full of information and ideas are the Career Connected Learning Resources Hub and the Oregon Employability Skills website

Use these sites to help identify resources that you can use in your classroom to support CCL and then share your successes with us.  Together, we will collect stories of how CCL transforms the experiences of students and brings relevance, excitement and joy to their learning.

Please share the subscription information with other educators in your community interested in building strong partnerships with other teachers, administrators, counselors, families and business partners to support kids.  The ODE CCL team is looking forward to hearing from you as we build more CCL opportunities around the state.
