Check out the CACFP Memo Page for a list of all memos and announcements.
No new memos for CACFP since the last newsletter.
The previous version of this newsletter included an incorrect close date for the CACFP Renewals. This has been updated to August 18, 2023.
CACFP Renewals for Fiscal Year 2024 will start on August 1, 2023 and applications will close on August 18, 2023. The Fiscal Year for CACFP will still have the same October through September time frame with Fiscal Year 2024 starting October 1, 2023 and ending September 30, 2024.
Food Program Coordinators and Authorized Representatives will receive the CACFP Renewal Memo in their inboxes in late July 2023.
To get ready for CACFP renewals, we encourage you take the following steps:
- Notify your assigned Child Nutrition Specialist if there are any changes to the Authorized Representative or Food Program Coordinator roles and update your Sponsor Info Sheet in CNPweb for Fiscal Year 2023.
- The Food Program Coordinator must complete all required CACFP Annual Trainings (see CACFP Annual Training Memo from March 20, 2023) if it has not been completed already - if you are not sure of your current status, check with your assigned Child Nutrition Specialist
- Talk with your administration and team, and work together to collect the information you need for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 operating period of October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2024. Information needed will include: Sites that will be operating and the meal service times and dates, months of operation, lead site staff, your operation's CACFP management plan, and more.
- If you are a CACFP Sponsor on a school year calendar with site(s) operating in September 2023, check your CNPweb FY 2023 applications to ensure that your Site Info Sheet is up to date.
- For Sponsors that require a budget: Work with your finance staff to review your FY 2023 budget and update it for FY 2024.
Make your opinions heard!
Every year, ODE CNP provides annual CACFP training to all Oregon Sponsors as part of a USDA requirement. However, trainings can take different forms and we want to make sure that our trainings are working for you.
This year, ODE CNP presented our CACFP Annual Trainings as a series of online trainings with quizzes to track your progress. Tell us what you thought of this format and how we can improve our trainings. Also, let us know what you want from future trainings. Our team reviews all feedback and our trainings are developed based on your responses. Your opinions are important and we want to hear from you!
Take the survey here: CACFP Annual Training Survey. The survey will close on June 30, 2023.
Team Nutrition is excited to announce the newest addition to our web quiz collection: the Child Nutrition Label Quiz! This new quiz reinforces information provided by the Child Nutrition (CN) Labeling Program and the Food Buying Guide for Child Nutrition Programs.
The Child Nutrition Label Quiz helps operators identify products eligible for a CN label and understand the requirements for accepting CN labeled products. It is comprised of 10 self-paced questions and provides feedback for correct and incorrect answer choices. The user may retake the quiz or retry questions as many times as desired. Take the quiz today at https://www.fns.usda.gov/quiz/child-nutrition-label-quiz.
Team Nutrition Quizzes can be used for self-paced knowledge assessments, at trainings, or at other nutrition events as a fun and engaging learning activity. Upon completion of each quiz, quiz takers receive a score along with a link to resources that can help expand their knowledge on the topic and build their menu planning skills. The quizzes are also available as widgets, so they can be easily embedded and displayed on other web pages to support training.
Team Nutrition has created new Crediting Grains in the Child Nutrition Programs Tip Sheets. These tip sheets provide guidance on crediting grains in a quick reference format for Program operators across all Child Nutrition Programs and are broken down into three topics:
- Part 1: Creditable Grains in Child Nutrition Programs
- Part 2: Identifying Grain Products that are Whole Grain-Rich
- Part 3: Program Requirements
Each tip sheet has its own question-and-answer section. Sponsors are encouraged to use these resources to provide guidance and training.
Check out the first four tip sheets in the series (Crediting Fruits, Crediting Vegetables, Crediting Meats/Meat Alternates, and Crediting Fluid Milk) at https://www.fns.usda.gov/tn/crediting-tip-sheets-child-nutrition-programs. The entire tip sheet series will be available for print at a later date. Stay tuned!

The Native American Agriculture Fund and FRAC are launching a new survey for continued research about food access, food sovereignty, and food security for Native American people that can help determine resources needed to improve access to nutritious food for tribal communities. Deadline for responses is June 30, 2023.
Spread the Word Please share this communications toolkit to highlight the important issue of Native American food insecurity and encourage others to take the food access survey. The toolkit includes sample social media posts, graphics, and newsletter/email for you to customize for your stakeholders.
Background Findings from the last survey conducted in February 2021, showed that 49 percent of American Indian and Alaska Natives experienced food insecurity during COVID-19 and one in four experienced very low food insecurity.
The report on the survey findings, “Reimagining Hunger Responses in Times of Crisis, ” illuminates the challenges of food security in Indian Country and the Tribally-driven solutions needed to address those challenges.
