Over the July 4th holiday weekend, local law enforcement will be expanding their efforts with zero tolerance for impaired driving. The goal is to save lives. This is why ODOT in partnership with NHTSA are reminding everyone to drive sober or plan for a safe ride home.
Drive high get a DUI
You can’t drive safely if you’re impaired. That’s why it’s illegal everywhere in America to drive under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, opioids, methamphetamines, or any potentially impairing drug–prescribed or over the counter. Driving while impaired by any substance—legal or illegal—puts you and others in harm’s way.

Buzzed driving is drunk driving
Every day, about 32 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that's one person every 44 minutes. In 2024, 11,904 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths. These crashes were all preventable.
Driving after drinking is deadly. Yet it still continues to happen across the United States. If you drive while impaired, you could get arrested, or worse — be involved in a traffic crash that causes serious injury or death.

Share your feedback by July 31 to make roads safer for everyone
2026 Employee Safety and Wellness Fair
We are excited to announce the upcoming Employee Safety and Wellness Fair will be held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 21 at the Oregon State Capitol Park near the water wall.
The American Red Cross blood drive will be taking place at the ODOT Headquarters Building at 355 Capitol Street in the basement.
Meet with state benefits providers, other agencies, and local businesses focused on safety and wellness. All are welcome!

Please watch for riders
The 2026 Baker City Motorcycle Rally is coming up July 10-12, and Baker City is getting ready to welcome hundreds of riders. The weather is looking good too, which should make for a great weekend for riding.
Oregon will see many other group rides and motorcycle events throughout the summer. With more riders on the road, ODOT is encouraging everyone — drivers and motorcyclists — to look out for one another.
We shared some motorcycle safety tips during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May, but they are helpful all year long. Feel free to pass them along in your own community announcements to help keep local events safe and enjoyable for everyone.
