PORTLAND -- North Lombard Street through the heart of North Portland just got smoother and safer for all users with completion of the Lombard Multimodal Safety Project.

The previous four-lane road -- U.S. 30 Bypass -- is now two lanes with center left-turn lanes, buffered bike lanes, pedestrian-activated crossings with median islands, new traffic signals and upgraded sidewalk curb ramps that meet Americans with Disabilities (ADA) requirements.

The project includes:

  • 1.3 miles of new pavement and center turn lanes
  • 2.4 miles of new buffered bike lanes
  • 5 new traffic signals
  • 91 safer crosswalks with fewer lanes to cross
  • 2 new pedestrian activated crossings with improved pedestrian visibility
  • 177 new ADA curb ramps.

The center turn lanes on North Lombard Street between North Newman Avenue and North Boston Avenue will improve traffic flow and safety for all travelers. Studies show that adding a center turn lane typically reduces crashes by up to 19%.

A three-lane road helps reduce crashes by 29%, resulting in safer crossings for bicyclists, pedestrians and transit users. It also reduces the risk of a crash for drivers turning left on and off North Lombard Street.

The new rectangular rapid flashing beacons will also ease stress for people crossing North Lombard Street. The pedestrian-activated beacons, an increasingly common part of the traffic safety picture in the Portland area, alert motorists that people are ready to cross the street. The beacons are a critical part of our efforts at ODOT to maintain a modern and safe transportation system, a priority in our Strategic Action Plan.

Planning for the Lombard Multimodal Safety Project improvements began three years ago as ODOT started looking at ways to improve this high crash corridor. The data showed that on average, a crash happened every nine days, more than half of them resulting in an injury.

ODOT partnered with the Portland Bureau of Transportation for the Lombard Multimodal Safety Project to improve safety for people driving, biking, walking, taking transit and using mobility devices, such as wheelchairs, along U.S. 30 Bypass/ North Lombard Street between North Fiske Avenue and Boston Avenue.
