PREVENT

How can you prevent undesired Behavior?

SETTING CLEAR EXPECTATIONS

Setting Clear Expectations - Tier 1

Use Clear and Precise Directions to deliver the expectation.

  1.  Get 100% of student attention through an attention-getting signal                        (i.e., “Give Me Five,” Visual Noise Screen, or Call and Response)
  2.  Deliver Directions via the CAN Method:                                               Communication Level- “Quietly”                                                                         Action- “Get your Chromebook”                                                                           Next Step- “Log onto Digital Classroom”

TEACH

How can you teach a desired Behavior?

T1 Practice Teach

Teaching Expectations - Tier 1

I Do, We Do, You Do.

  • I Do = Model the skill or behavior that you want students to engage. Example language: “Watch me [do these math problems; read this sentence; raise my hand; walk on the right side of hallway].”
  • We Do = The teacher and student should engage in the skill or behavior simultaneously, together, or side by side. Provide positive feedback during this step, and repeat as necessary.
  • You Do = Student shows they can complete the step independently. Allow them to show you the skill 2-3 times, then provide positive praise for demonstrating the skill.

Additional strategies: These practices can be used with any learning materials, in any setting, and are sufficient to support your students in all environments, Tools To Teach.

"Research shows that when students—particularly those from traditionally marginalized groups—feel like they belong in the classroom, they engage more deeply in the learning process." -- Edutopia
