OSDE Update

Welcome back to school!  I hope you had an amazing summer with learning and relaxation.  Oklahoma students are ready to sing, paint, dance, draw, play, act, and learn with YOU!

As you prepare for another school year, remember that there is a coalition of people ready to help.  The OSDE, Oklahoma Arts Council, Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education, professional organizations, museums, music stores, etc., are here for you!  If you have questions or need anything, please reach out to us.

The fine arts office at the OSDE will hum with activity this year as we finalize new fine arts standards for all four subject areas.  Be sure to look for the public comment period in October and November.  In order for the new standards to work for all Oklahoma arts educators and their students, we need feedback from you.  Please contribute to the discussion this fall.

If you're feeling a little isolated in your building or part of the state, consider being part of a professional organization.  It's not easy to make it to the metros for professional development, but many groups have a social media presence and are willing to help in any way that they can.

Oklahoma Fine Arts Professional Organizations

Funding is often one of the main concerns as school starts again.  You may want to look into grants from these organizations.

If you have any questions about fine arts in Oklahoma, teacher certification, course codes, etc., contact me any time.  If I do not have an answer, I'll work to find one as quickly as possible.  Have a creative and fulfilling school year!  ~Elizabeth Maughan

Youth in Harmony - OK City Chorus

Harmony

Registration for the Youth in Harmony Workshop, presented by the OK City Chorus, is now open. During the August 24th Youth in Harmony Festival, singers will enjoy a one-day event unlike any other. The day begins with vocal and physical warmups, followed by a day of learning about vocal technique, emotional delivery, performance, and the a cappella art form of barbershop harmony.  The day ends with a spectacular performance to show-off the day's hard work alongside the award-winning OK City Chorus!

This year's festival is for girls, grades 8-12.  If you have any questions about age limits, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thanks to assistance from Allied Arts and the Young Singers Foundation, the registration fee is only $15 and  includes 2 meals, t-shirt, a full day of instruction and the evening performance on August 24th.  Note: Group rate of $10 per student is available for groups of 10 or more.

Teachers and education leaders across the state have made it clear to the Oklahoma Arts Council that classroom art supplies are one of their greatest needs in delivering high quality visual and performing arts education programs. Funding for art supplies is essential for Oklahoma schools to sustain valuable art programs that help students succeed in their education and beyond.

To meet this critical need of schools in our state, the Oklahoma Arts Council offers Classroom Supply Grants of up to $500 per site per school year to purchase supplies and materials for visual and performing arts instruction that takes place during the school day.
