Seth Week

As you may have seen in a previous press release, this coming week will be known as "Seth Week" for Deer Park Jr/Sr High School.  Deer Park Student Seth Dryer was diagnosed with a rare disease in September of 2018.  This disease, known as AFM, has left Seth paralyzed, and Seth and his family has come to face numerous challenges.  Our students have worked with our school to create "Seth Week" for this coming week to help not only raise awareness, but to create opportunities for our students and community to show support to Seth and his family.

Here is a link to that press release with everything you and your student needs to know about Seth Week!

What's New?

Chromebook Check-Ins

As we near the end of the 2nd quarter, this is a great time to help your student ensure that his/her Chromebook is located and consistently charged.  While we have a handful of extra Chromebooks to loan out every day, these are limited in number and we sometimes run out.  We will begin loaning these out to students by prioritizing students with Chromebooks under repair.  Thank you for your help!

Deer Park Emotional Support Dog

Parents, we wanted to let you know of an exciting addition to our “staff”. Charley, a registered emotional support dog, will be visiting classrooms this year. He is a miniature golden doodle and hypoallergenic. He will be escorted and on leash at all times by a district employee. He will be available to visit classrooms for buddy reading time, emotional breaks and support for students, inspiration for projects, support for life skills and a variety of other supports for students. If you have a concern about your child being near Charley, please contact your building principal so we can be sure to honor your request. Charley is excited to meet your student!

Counseling Department Updates!

This week's Counselor Corner has updates as well as a great article on how to help your student cope with Test Anxiety.  A great article to read through as we approach exams.

Here is a link to this week's Counselor Corner!

Advice from On To College: On To College through John Baylor Prep is a valuable resource for any parents and students looking to gain inside information for the college enrolment processes.  Here is a link to their News & Media site.  This week contains information for getting recommendation letters, alternatives to college visits, and more!

In Case You Missed It

Miami University Parenting/Youth Study

Miami University is offering the opportunity to participate in a research study for parents and youth well-being.  This survey requires little time, can be conducted at the parents' convenience, and participants will be compensated for their participation.  For more information, please click here.

Vaping/E-Cigarettes Info Session

Beckett Springs is hosting a free seminar on December 10th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Mercy Health Plex in Fairfield (3050 Mack Rd, 45014) for anyone interested in understanding more about vaping/e-cigarettes.

As we know from watching recent news stories, vaping has led to numerous health issues, including death, for many Americans, and we'd like to provide any extra resources for parents that we can.  To register for the event, please contact KristinaErtel@spsh.com.

Additional Notes from the Guidance Office

Pride Survey Information: As we continue our drug prevention efforts at Deer Park Jr/Sr High, we ask for your support as we administer the PreventionFIRST! Student Survey. This is an anonymous student survey about alcohol use, drug use, and other health behaviors.  The survey information will assist us in assessing our successes or failures in educating students of the health and safety value of not using alcohol and drugs. The PreventionFIRST! Student Survey is a thoroughly researched group of questions that can give us valuable insight into many positive and negative student health behaviors. The survey is an anonymous survey and students are not required to participate, it is voluntary on the part of each student.

If you prefer that your child not participate please inform our office, in writing, before Nov. 15th as the survey will be administered the week of Nov. 25th .

A copy of the survey is available in the main office if you would like to review its content.  A summary of the information gathered will be shared with parents when results are obtained. Thank you for supporting our efforts to help students understand that alcohol and drug use can be harmful to their health and safety.
