Under a public health order issued by Acting Health Secretary David R. Scrase, M.D., the re-implemented mask requirement applies to all individuals aged 2 and older in all indoor public settings — except when eating or drinking.
Masks will be required to everyone in school buildings regardless of vaccination status, which aligns with the most recent guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Public Education Department has been in the process of updating its toolkit for schools and district personnel.
The indoor mask requirement will be effective Friday, Aug. 20. It will remain in effect until at least September 15. The governor, acting upon the counsel and analysis of the state Medical Advisory Team and state health officials, may decide to extend or lift the requirement as necessary.
Businesses, houses of worship and other entities may enact stricter requirements at their discretion.

The Bernalillo County Department of Behavioral Health Services (DBHS) hosted a ribbon-cutting event in celebration of the official opening of the new detoxification (detox) facility. For more than a decade, Bernalillo County has managed the CARE Campus, formally known as the Metropolitan Addiction Treatment Services (MATS), detox program. On Sept. 2, 2021, the current program will move to a new detox unit, at the CARE Campus, which will allow for additional space and semi-private rooms. The facility will feature modifications allowing increased safety, privacy, and comfort which will promote a sense of greater dignity for clients, and in turn greater opportunity for client engagement in services.

Bernalillo County’s newest installation expands renowned public art collection
Luminaria, a six-piece artwork by international artist Gordon Huether, was unveiled Aug. 28 on the plaza of the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office by a group including regional officials, Huether, and families of victims of violence.
The title, Luminaria, references a significant tradition in New Mexico: brown paper bags with cut out patterns, weighted down by sand and illuminated by candles from within. The work consists of three sculptures 7-ft, 8-ft and 9-ft in height, accompanied by three cylindrical concrete seating components to offer space for contemplation and reflection. Each sculpture’s shape was inspired by the shape of a barrel cactus and features eight long “petals,” which start at the base and curve up to connect at the top.
