Cervical Cancer Screening Guidelines
The WMHP sent a Provider Update in January that includes the below information. WMHP would like to remind you that the program will be following these guidelines.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) has released updated cervical cancer screening guidelines. These updates reflect the latest research and recommendations aimed at improving screening access and helping individuals stay informed about their health. The updated guidelines introduce the option of self-collection of vaginal samples for HPV testing and new guidance on when screening can end.
ACS Screening Recommendations: Women and other individuals with a cervix at average risk for cervical cancer should start screening at age 25 and continue until at least age 65.
The preferred screening option is primary HPV testing (testing only for HPV infection) on a cervical sample collected by a health care provider. This test should be done every 5 years.
-
Self-collected* HPV testing, every 3 years: For this test, the patient collects their own testing sample by inserting a soft swab into their vagina. It can be done privately in a clinic, doctor's office or at home. A health care provider still needs to order the test, and it should be done every 3 years.
- Every Woman Matters, beginning January 15, 2026, started covering in-clinic HPV self-collection once every five years in accordance to guidelines. EWM currently covers two FDA-approved test kits:
- BD Onclarity with Copan 522C.80 swab
- Roche cobas with Evalyn brush or Copan 522C.80 swab
- HPV self-collection test uses the same CPT codes as primary HPV testing:
- 87624: Human Papillomavirus (HPV), high risk types
- 87625: Human Papillomavirus (HPV), types 16 and 18 only
- 87626: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Infectious agent detection by nucleic acid (DNA or RNA)
- To indicate that this test was performed during the patient visit: write HPV Self-Collect on the Screening Card under Screening Pap if you receive a card that does not have a check box
-
Co-testing, every 5 years: In some places, HPV testing is combined with a Pap test, which is a test that looks at cervical cells under a microscope. The health care provider collects the sample for this type of testing. It should be done every 5 years.
-
Pap test alone, every 3 years: If none of the other approaches are an option, patients can be screened with a Pap test alone every 3 years.
*Self-collection should only be done using tests and collection devices approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These are only available at the health care provider offices.
Please review the American Cancer Society and National Roundtable on Cervical Cancer’s Preparing for self-collection Clinician Communication Guide for important considerations before implementation.
If you have questions please call EWM at 800-532-2227 or 402-471-0929.

Do you have patients that need preventive care services?
Have you often wondered what you can offer patients for preventive care services that are underinsured, have insurance but has a high deductible or maybe they just have catastrophic coverage?
Well, one thing that you can do is try to enroll them in the Every Woman Matters and Nebraska Colon Cancer Screening Program.
EWM serves as a payer of last resort. If a patient has insurance, EWM may still help cover remaining costs for preventive screenings or procedures after the insurance has been billed. In some cases, EWM payments can also apply toward a patient’s deductible for high-deductible plans. The exception is for individuals enrolled in Medicaid or Medicare Part B, since those programs already cover these services and EWM would not provide additional support.
