The first step of Verification begins on October 1. On that date you should count up the qualifying applications that you have received this year. Do not include any applications that were denied/over income.
- Verify 3% of the qualifying applications. To find out how many applications that is, multiply the number of qualifying applications by .03 to get the number of applications you must verify. Any fraction needs to be rounded up, so if you get 1.05 applications, you must round the number up and verify two applications.
- The verification process consists of contacting the household by letter requesting the documents needed for verification of the income listed on the application. A due date of ten days must be included. If the household does not comply by the due date, at least one follow up contact must be made with the household to obtain the documentation.
- The verification process ends on November 15th. If the household has not responded by then, the household is then notified that the benefits will be terminated in 10 days.
- A report of the verification process needs to be filed in NDFoods by December 15th. Even if no verification was conducted, a verification report still needs to be filed. This report will open in the NDFoods application on November 1st.
The steps and the documentation needed to complete the verification process are located on the bottom of the following website page: https://www.nd.gov/dpi/districtsschools/child-nutrition-and-food-distribution/school-nutrition-program/snp-free-reduced.

This letter is not required to be sent to households; however, school officials are encouraged to clarify for families that the carryover of the household eligibility from the previous year will end after 30 operating days. The letter should inform families to submit a new application for school meals to re-establish their child’s eligibility before the end of the carryover period. If a family does not respond to the letter by submitting a new application, benefits are terminated on the 31st day of operation. The household does not have the right to appeal this termination as the eligibility is a carryover from the previous year’s application.
You can find this notification letter HERE or on our website SNP Free & Reduced Price Information | North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (nd.gov) under the "Letters of Eligibility Notification" drop down tab.

National School Lunch Week (NSLW) was created in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy to promote the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has both in and out of the classroom. |
The School Nutrition Associations (SNA) theme for the October 10-14, 2022 celebration is “Peace, Love &School Lunch”. It may look and sound like the 80’s, but indeed the trends are coming back!
SNA goals of NSLW:
- Increase student participation
- Spread the message to parents that school’s are serving healthy, delicious lunch at school
- Earn media coverage
- Connect with teachers and admin at your school/district to spread the word about school meals

We hope you are proudly displaying the poster featuring the canola as a top product of North Dakota. If you are in the northwestern part of our state, you may have seen the beautiful yellow flowering crop. The canola plants have 'canola seeds' which are crushed into oil. Canola is also used to make things besides edible food items.
Check out the great resources that the Northern Canola Growers have put together: Kids | Northern Canola Growers Association
Send us pictures of how you feature CANOLA during October! We would love to see them!
