Students that were eligible for free or reduced-price meals in SY 19/20, 20/21 or 21/22 can be carried over in their most recent status for 30 school days. You can search for your old Direct Cert lists in STARS and use your rosters from those years. Use the most recent determination per student.
Remember to change the students back to paid on the 31st day of school if they do not re-apply.
Looking for a quick social media post/video on the school meal changes for this year? SNA created this quick video for you to use/access as you need!
Schools that collect income applications must “verify” or check the income listed on 3% of the applications that were determined free or reduced-price. Any new applications from this school year, July 1 up to October 1, are in the verification pool to choose 3% to verify, round up any fractions, even 1.02 rounds up to 2. Please remember, this is 3% of applications, not students and not students on the Direct Cert list, just applications. For the vast majority of our schools, this will be only one application. Choose the sample from applications that were really close to the income limits if possible. Do not verify denied applications; you only verify that students actually receiving benefits are eligible. Any applications received after October 1 are not in the verification sample.
Rolling verification: You do not have to wait until October 1 to start verification efforts. If you know the district usually only needs to verify one application and you receive one with income so close to the guidelines that you calculate it twice, and is an error-prone application and a good one to verify. Even if you have to verify seventeen applications, you can start early. Just remember to calculate the 3% on October 1 and verify more if necessary.

National School Lunch Week (NSLW) was created in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy to promote the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has both in and out of the classroom. |
The School Nutrition Associations (SNA) theme for the October 10-14, 2022 celebration is “Peace, Love &School Lunch”. It may look and sound like the 80’s, but indeed the trends are coming back!
SNA goals of NSLW:
- Increase student participation
- Spread the message to parents that school’s are serving healthy, delicious lunch at school
- Earn media coverage
- Connect with teachers and admin at your school/district to spread the word about school meals

We hope you are proudly displaying the poster featuring the combine making its way through one of the top state crops. Most students have seen these gigantic machines rolling through a field but many have not seen one up close. Connecting the farm to the table might mean making arrangements for a combine to visit the school or maybe just the farmer who drives the combine. Inviting the farmer to break bread with the students during the lunch hour might give them the opportunity to pose questions about the hours he or she works, what they do in the winter when the wheat has been harvested and what the price of wheat is right now. |
At least, check out the great resources that the North Dakota Wheat commission has available. Education activities for the elementary grades will help teachers explain how the wheat seed that a farmer plants in the ground becomes the bread or pasta on their table. Educational Activities & Materials | ND Wheat Commission
The recipes that are posted on the ND Wheat Commission would give you some ideas for menuing wheat. These recipes are not standardized for a school kitchen but could be if you were interested. We can calculate the components for you. Contact our office with your recipe(s) at dpicnfd@nd.gov
Send us pictures of how you feature wheat during September! We would love to see them!

The third Tuesday of the month lands on September 20th. At 2 p.m. Central Time, we will perform the “Cashier’s Training” that every School District is required to do every year. Authorized reps must answer the question, “Explain how persons responsible for taking meal counts are trained on identifying reimbursable meals, offer vs. serve and civil rights.” on SFN 9188 ‘Meal Counting and Claim Preparation’ form as part of the school nutrition program renewal each year. Most answered the question as ‘DPI training each year.’
Since we did not cover these topics at the Back-to-School workshops this year, this will be a presentation to cover that training. This is for any staff – kitchen, administration, or teachers - that are given the responsibility for deciding if the meal that a student chooses can be counted to claim the federal reimbursement. The mandatory Civil Rights, what is a reimbursable meal, and how to implement offer vs. serve at both breakfast and lunch will be covered during our hour together. It will be recorded, so if your POS staff are not available on Tuesday, September 20th at 2 p.m., ask them to watch it later.
See you Tuesday, September 20th at 2 p.m. over your favorite TEAMS channel:
