Global Education remains a priority in North Carolina! At its core, global education is about enabling young people to participate in shaping a better, shared future for the world. International Education Week (IEW) is a wonderful way for students and educators to come together and celebrate the benefits of education and cultural exchange worldwide. This initiative is a joint effort of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State.
This year IEW will be November 18-22, 2024. In addition to a Professional Development Day on November 9, an array of opportunities and activities have been planned by the NCDPI Global Education Steering Committee to inform our stakeholders about how NC educators and students are globally aware and competent. Global Perspectives Professional Development

As we engage, educate, and empower the young people of North Carolina, how do we learn from other examples from around the world? What does engagement look like across cultures? What role does education play in making a more robust, peaceful, and prosperous global community?
North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the Area Studies Centers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University and the are thrilled to offer an incredible professional development opportunity as part of International Education Week (IEW) that is designed to enhance your global understanding and perspective and tackle these big questions with examples from culture, music, art, language, science, history, and other disciplines.
The focus of this year's event is "Engage, Educate, Empower: Elevating K-12 Learning through Global Perspectives". Expert speakers from UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University, and beyond have been lined up to unpack a variety of captivating topics and case studies from Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
The aim of this professional development is to equip K-12 educators with innovative global education-related teaching materials and strategies that can be adapted to different K-12 subjects while aligning with North Carolina standards.
This workshop is for ALL educators, regardless of your content area or grade level. Educators who attend the in-person workshop on November 9 can earn 0.5 CEUs.
 Professional Development for World Language Educators
NCDPI Standards Update Webinar #2
Wednesday, November 6 at 4:00 - 5:15 pm
The 2024-2025 World Languages Standards Update Webinar Series will continue this Wednesday, November 6, with an overview of the updated proficiency outcome charts at 4:00-5:15 pm. All World Language educators can submit the online registration form to claim a virtual seat, and those that participate in the live broadcast will earn a Certificate of Attendance.
This series continues throughout 2024-2025 as part of the World Languages' Installation Timeline, and there are also broadcasts scheduled about the instructional support tools and resources, as well as the plans for initial implementation in the 2025-2026 school year. Professional Learning for All K-12 Educators
NCDPI Writing PD Webinar Series
The NCDPI English Language Arts (ELA) Team is offering a Writing PD Series in 2024-2025 to support the integration of writing across disciplines. The series is grounded in the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS), the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCoS), and current research. There are three upcoming webinars scheduled on the following Thursdays from 3:45 - 5:00 pm:
- Teaching Vocabulary in the Context of Writing - November 7
- Writing in Response to Reading - March 20
- Time-Constrained Writing - April 10
To register for one or more of the broadcasts, view the Canva flyer. Participants who attend at least three out of the four sessions in this series will earn a 2024-2025 Writing Series badge.
