NCDPI Standards Update Webinar #2
Wednesday, November 6 at 4:00 - 5:15 pm
The 2024-2025 World Languages Standards Update Webinar Series will continue this Wednesday, November 6, with an overview of the updated proficiency outcome charts at 4:00-5:15 pm. All World Language educators can submit the online registration form to claim a virtual seat, and those that participate in the live broadcast will earn a Certificate of Attendance.
This series continues throughout 2024-2025 as part of the World Languages' Installation Timeline, and there are also broadcasts scheduled about the instructional support tools and resources, as well as the plans for initial implementation in the 2025-2026 school year. The American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) is organizing its 22nd Annual National French Week, and, as part of that celebration, Villa Albertine and Marie-Hélène Marcoux from Québec have decided to repeat the workshop, La lecture collaborative:un outil puissant pour lire, discuter et parler, from October for any secondary teachers who missed it. This online workshop is free and will be conducted entirely in French on Tuesday afternoon, November 12, from 4:00-5:30 pm Eastern.

Professional Learning for All K-12 Educators
NCDPI Writing PD Webinar Series
The NCDPI English Language Arts (ELA) Team is offering a Writing PD Series in 2024-2025 to support the integration of writing across disciplines. The series is grounded in the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS), the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCoS), and current research. There are three upcoming webinars scheduled on the following Thursdays from 3:45 - 5:00 pm:
- Teaching Vocabulary in the Context of Writing - November 7
- Writing in Response to Reading - March 20
- Time-Constrained Writing - April 10

 The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and the Area Studies Centers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University are thrilled to offer an incredible professional development opportunity as part of International Education Week (IEW) that is designed to enhance your global understanding and perspective. The focus of this year's event is "Engage, Educate, Empower: Elevating K-12 Learning through Global Perspectives." Expert speakers from UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University, and beyond have been lined up to unpack a variety of captivating topics and case studies from Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
The aim of this professional development is to equip K-12 educators with innovative global education-related teaching materials and strategies that can be adapted to different K-12 subjects while aligning with North Carolina standards. This workshop is for ALL educators, regardless of your content area or grade level. Educators who attend the in-person workshop in Chapel Hill on Saturday, November 9 can earn 0.5 CEUs. NCCAT Online Courses
The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) offers a variety of professional learning, including online courses that are available as self-paced modules where educators can earn 5 to 15 contact hours. NCCAT Online Courses are available year-round, and North Carolina educators with an active teaching license can register for up to two (2) courses per quarter.

Opportunities for World Language Educators
Classroom Microgrants Program for Language Educators
Applications due for the first cycle on Tuesday, November 12
The Language Connects Foundation (LCF)/Vista Microgrants Program for Language Educators is an initiative aimed at supporting and empowering those who are passionate about teaching languages and incorporating cultural elements into their lessons.
This program is open to all K-12 language educators regardless of setting. Eligible individuals may apply for grants of $300 to fund a variety of projects, such as:
- Organizing cultural events or activities for their learners, including those in collaboration with relevant community organizations; and
- Creating projects that support diverse perspectives and provide opportunities to develop cultural competence.
There will be 100 microgrants of $300 each awarded between September 2024 and May 2025 across three funding cycles, which have the following application periods and deadlines:
- September 2 to November 12, with awards announced on Monday, November 18;
- November 13 to February 5, with awards announced on Monday, February 10; and
- February 6 to April 30, with awards announced on Monday, May 5.

2024-25 French in Higher Education Grant Program
Applications due Saturday, November 30
The French in Higher Education program is officially accepting proposals for its 2024-25 competition. Villa Albertine, the Institute for Culture and Education, and the Albertine Foundation are offering grants to support innovative projects, including job fairs and internship programs, in French and Francophone studies at US post-secondary institutions. The aim is to enhance the quality of French programs and boost enrollments.
Grant amounts vary from $2,000 to $20,000, with matching funds encouraged but not mandatory. Selected projects will exemplify how dynamic, resilient, and useful learning French is today. The funding shall be used to initiate mid-to-long-term changes through innovation and/or immersive internship programs. For example, in 2023, 21 universities received grants for innovative projects ranging from the development of a professional center for internships in partnership with the Alliance Française to the design of a French for Health Professions and Humanitarian Aid course. All US post-secondary institutions can apply, and applications must be supported by department heads or deans. Selected projects should begin between March 2025 and September 2025 and last a minimum of 2 years. STARTALK Chinese Summer Academy for High School Students
Applications due before Saturday, November 30
The Carolina Asia Center will host a summer camp on July 13 - 26, 2025, supported by the STARTALK program. This Chinese Summer Academy for high school students learning Chinese intends to help develop an understanding and appreciation of the cultural diversity in the community and share what they have learned through our program with international visitors. The program also aims to continue building students’ target language proficiency and increasing their motivation to learn Chinese through the integration of cultural elements in task designs and meaningful socialization in the community. Any students in North Carolina who meet the grade level (9-12) and target language proficiency (Novice-High to Intermediate-Mid) criteria of the program are welcome to apply, regardless of prior STARTALK program participation. High school students who want to join this program can apply by submitting the online application form posted on the STARTALK Chinese Summer Academy 2025 webpage, which is also accessible using the button below.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all the spots are filled. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply before November 30, 2024.
NCDPI K-12 Hour of Code Expo
RSVP by December 2 for December 12 Event
Computer Science, IT, and Technology Education is excited to announce the K-12 Hour of Code Student Expo. Student-led Computer Science teams from across North Carolina will be showcasing the skills they are learning within the realm of coding and Computer Science.
Students will present current Computer Science projects and activities happening in their school. Join the fun-filled learning as students provide demonstrations and hands-on activities for NCDPI employees, State Board of Education members, legislators, media, and others.

NC-AATG German Day
Register by December 16 for March 5 Event
The North Carolina chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (NC-AATG) will be hosting the 2025 German Day for students on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Wake Forest University. The theme is “Mit Deutsch am Ball bleiben," and the T-Shirt design and ordering deadlines will be posted later this fall on the new German Day website, along with the submission deadline for virtual events.
Teachers need to submit registration for their classes to participate in 2025 German Day by Monday, December 16, 2024. Registration will be $10 per student, and additional details are being posted on the German Day website, including Contest Rules for all competitions, the schedule for the day, and a registration link.

The North Carolina Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (NC DSDHH) is hosting American Sign Language (ASL) Storytelling Time for children through Zoom during the 2024-2025 school year.
