Standards Review, Revision, and Implementation Updates
Progress for World Languages in the Review Phase
The World Languages Data Review Committee (DRC) has begun meeting to analyze the data collected and compiled from Standard-by-Standard surveys, regional focus groups, and individual interviews about the current Standard Course of Study, the North Carolina World Language Essential Standards. They are also reviewing the research, policies, and legislation that pertain to World Language education.

The DRC completes a report organizing the data points, as well as the trends and themes emerging from their analysis, and ultimately makes recommendations for revision. Then the NCDPI World Languages team brings forward to the State Board of Education (SBE) a recommendation for revision, and World Languages will likely be on the agenda for the SBE meeting(s) in late spring or summer.
Please see pages 14 - 16 of the North Carolina SCOS Internal Procedures Manual for additional details about the DRC work during the review phase.
NCDPI's Office of Academic Standards serves as the authoritative source for the review, revision, and support for the implementation of state content standards in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (SCOS).
The roadmap below shows an overview of various content areas and the status of their standards work for the 2022 - 2023 school year. The March 2023 Curriculum Leaders' Newsletter had additional details, and resources for each content area are linked on the NCDPI Standard Course of Study webpage.

Global Education Partnerships with France
Application Open to All K-12 Teachers in Any Subject
North Carolina has international agreements or Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with public education systems in Spain, China, and, since 2020, France. One of the objectives of the MOU with the Académie de Reims in France is to establish partnerships between teachers in France and North Carolina so that they and their students can work on common projects virtually.
Please see the 20-minute Overview of School Partnerships video and/or the slides as a PDF with information about submitting an online application to be matched with a colleague and school in France.
Note: As of March 2023, there are several schools in the Académie de Reims with teachers who would like to partner with an American colleague soon so that planning could take place during the summer. They are mostly at the middle school (collège) or high school (lycée) levels, and their project interests range from language and literature to STEM, science, history, CTE, and the arts, plus sports and other extracurricular activities.
Here's the shortened URL to the online application: bit.ly/NCandVAapplicationReimsPartnership
Questions about the MOU with France can be sent to the NCDPI Global Education Steering Committee at ncglobaleducation@dpi.nc.gov and additional details are on the International Agreements page of the NCDPI website's Global Education section, including information about the other MOUs.

World Languages Resources Hub
The NCDPI World Languages Resources Hub is available to all and can be accessed with this shortened URL: bit.ly/NCWLresources. This Canvas Hub houses a variety of resources that are organized into four main sections, including the Teacher & Classroom Resources section that has six areas to explore:
The World Language Essential Standards (WLES) Assessment Examples or AEs were developed to support standards implementation and serve as examples of some ways that standards (or parts of the standards) might be assessed in the classroom, by individual teachers. Please see the AE booklets compiled by proficiency level on this page.
Note: External assessment resources, like those sometimes used with the CDM process and its World Language guidance, as well as the Global Languages Endorsement (GLE) or NC's Seal of Biliteracy, can be found in the Administrator & Program Resources section under Crosswalks.
The three WLES K-12 Bridging documents are designed as guides to help teachers and administrators create a strong K-12 sequence locally for the program(s) being offered:
The WLES Clarifying Objectives by Course Outcomes (COCOs or CO2s) documents are used for standards-based curriculum writing in North Carolina, which is done locally by individual, department, school, or district. These documents have been compiled from the proficiency charts with student outcomes in the World Language Essential Standards.
Notes: These materials are downloadable as Word documents so that they can easily be used for curriculum writing and shared among colleagues for collaboration. Each document also contains the language-specific course code(s) for the course as a reference.
There are individual language buttons on this page to go to the specific K-12 language page(s) with the sequence of courses, course codes, and COCOs or CO2 documents for curriculum writing.
The WLES Graphic Organizer packets are available for each of the proficiency levels, Novice Low - Advanced Mid, in the World Language Essential Standards. The packets are comprised of information about the graphic organizers, a mini-lesson with several components including one or more Assessment Examples (AE), and the graphic organizer to be used in, or adapted for, the classroom.
There are a variety of language-specific websites with free online resources for the 18 World Languages currently taught K-12 in North Carolina, plus several others, that have been shared by educators, groups, organizations, and publications involved with World Language education. The languages are listed alphabetically, American Sign Language - Vietnamese, so you may need to scroll down to find the language(s) you teach or administer.
Note: The inclusion of any resources on these lists does NOT constitute endorsement or verification by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
LinguaFolio® is a proficiency-based, student-centered, formative assessment tool that is aligned to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (SCOS), which includes the English Language Development (ELD) Standards and the World Language Essential Standards.
The LinguaFolio for NC Hub at https://bit.ly/LF4NCHub is the place where these resources are housed for our state, including the national LinguaFolio materials from NCSSFL.
