Standards Updates
Science
After the closing of the surveys for Draft 1 of the proposed 2023 K-12 Science Standards in December, the Office of Learning Recovery completed their analysis of the data the first week of January. The Science Data Review Committee (DRC) held full day online meetings the second week of January to prepare their recommendations for edits/improvements to the proposed 2023 K-12 Science Standards. The Standards Writing team met in-person on February 6th to review the DRC’s report and recommendations and begin preparing a second draft of proposed standards. Work on the second draft is on-going with the goal of releasing the draft for public review the last week of February. There will only be 1 survey released for the second draft, which will be sent to ALL stakeholders to provide comment. There will not be a PSU specific survey. The survey will be open for 30 days. Once that survey window closes, the DRC will complete another review of the feedback and make any additional recommendations for the SWT. The current timeline maintains the goal of presenting final recommendations to the State Board of Education for review at the June meeting and then official approval at the July meeting.

Healthful Living
The Data Review Committee (DRC) has completed the initial data review report which summarizes information gained through research, surveys, interviews, and focus groups. The report was used by the Standards Writing Team (SWT) during their initial meeting February 7th and 8th to begin formulating an initial draft of both Health and Physical Education Standards. Once complete, the initial draft will be released to the field in the form of a survey to gather feedback. The survey, available in March, will be open for 30 days.
World Languages
All-Stakeholder and PSU Surveys
As of January 20th, the all-stakeholder and PSU surveys are closed. Data is currently being compiled and cleaned for the Data Review Committee (DRC).
Data Review Committee (DRC) Applications
As of January 27th, the applications for the World Languages Data Review Committee (DRC) are closed. An internal DPI team is currently reviewing applications. Selected members will be notified by the end of February 2023.
Arts
We are close to the 80% threshold for the Standards Review PSU survey. We plan to close both the all stakeholder and the PSU specific survey on March 3. If your PSU needs the link to the PSU specific survey, please reach out to Dr. Lori Carlin at lori.carlin@dpi.nc.gov. Thank you for your input!

Legislation and Policy
PRC 085
PRC 085 funds are available to provide literacy interventions for kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students as required by General Statute and session law. The funds shall also be used to support the science of reading professional development. Term: July 1 - June 30
PRC 085 offers the opportunity to fund the following:

Literacy Intervention Funds (Local science of reading sustainability including training and materials)

Science of Reading (LETRS® training reimbursement for substitutes and stipends)

Twice Retained Student Tutoring (3rd-grade students retained twice)

Reading Camp Signing Bonuses
PSUs shall provide a signing bonus in an amount determined by the local board of education that is at least $1,200 to any teacher who meets all of the following criteria:
(1) Is associated with high growth in reading based on EVAAS data in any previous year.
(2) Was awarded a reading performance bonus based on EVAAS data and administered by the Department of Public Instruction in any previous fiscal year.
(3) Accepts employment to provide instruction during a reading camp.
Reading Camp Signing Bonuses may be paid out of PRC 085 in this fiscal year. Reading Camp Performance Bonuses may be paid out of PRC 085 next fiscal year.

PRC016 funds: We do not have specific details about when Reading Camp funds will be released.
*Friendly reminder- As your district plans for 2022-23 Reading Camps, please remember legislation only prioritizes funding for Grades 2 and 3. If districts choose to host Grade 1, please plan funding accordingly.

Feedback- LIS Form Submissions
The ELA Team is continuing to provide PSUs feedback on their LIS Form Submissions. The feedback is completed on a rolling-basis and is being sent to PSUs in the order the forms were received. PSUs should expect their feedback no later than November 15, 2023.

2023 Social Studies Leaders' Institute Registration
The NCDPI K-12 Social Studies Team is excited to offer the Social Studies Leaders' Institute on March 23-24, 2023. The Institute will be a meaningful way for you to increase your capacity as a social studies leader to build a strong local social studies curriculum.
The cost to attend the Institute is $30. Note that registration is nonrefundable.

Online Math PD
The K-12 Math team has started offering online Math PD. The sessions are led by math teachers and math leaders from around the State. Topics were chosen by math teachers. Our first two elementary sessions have had nearly 450 and 200 participants respectively. Our first middle school session had over 100 participants! The sessions include small group time, practice time, and are based on specific classroom tasks to support conceptual learning. 2023 Best of FLANC Spring Conference
The 2023 Best of FLANC Spring Conference features 30 sessions (15 World Language & 15 DL/I) and will be on Saturday, March 4, at the Marriott UNC Charlotte. ACCESS Testing Data Validation Training
Data Validation training is a critical final step in ACCESS testing. There are two opportunities to verify all data is correct. First, before the ACCESS testing window closes and then during the data validation window for PSUs that takes place April 4th - 17th. Together with the Office of Accountability, the NCDPI ML/Title III Team will host a training on Data Validation, on March 2nd from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm. Any PSU that participates in ACCESS testing should attend. Register now.

Coding in Minecraft Curriculum
‘Coding in Minecraft’ is a computer science curriculum and credential program supporting North Carolina grades 6-8. The ‘Coding in Minecraft’ program is aligned to the NC Computer Science Standards and is delivered through the Minecraft: Education Edition platform. The program is FREE for all North Carolina middle school teachers.
There will be a 45-minute webinar at 5:00 pm on Thursday, March 2, 2023, for all interested persons to discover how the ‘Coding in Minecraft’ curriculum and credential program can provide a standards-aligned computer science curriculum to students.

‘Coding in Minecraft’ can be used in ANY classroom in the following ways:

Career and Technical Education Credential Attainment Report (2021-2022)
Industry certifications and credentials are offered through multiple CTE courses. Credentials recognized by NC CTE are a valid proof of learning typically endorsed by business and industry partners and provide evidence of student mastery of skills required for employment and advancement in a career. The 2021-2022 Credential Attainment Report was presented to the State Board of Education during their February meeting and serves as a resource to PSUs. The report provides statewide results as well as each district’s credential attainment.
