P-EBT Attendance Coding for the 2022-23 SY

Student P-EBT will continue until the national public health emergency ends. While the USDA has not issued guidance for the coming school year, the Office of School Nutrition anticipates P-EBT issuance for SY 2022-23 will be similar to the process for last school year.

With this in mind, please remind teachers to record student attendance for any COVID-related absence with a PowerSchool Code of 1-D for the coming year. Accurate coding of COVID-related absences with a 1-D code will ensure eligible students receive the exact amount of P-EBT food assistance or which they are eligible.

Join the NC Healthy Schools Team, along with the NC Division of Child and Family Well-Being team members from DHHS office hours to share more about these opportunities and address questions.

New World Languages Resources Hub Available for 2022-23 SY

The NCDPI World Languages Team has released the new World Languages Resources Hub. This Canvas Hub houses a variety of resources for World Language educators, programs, K-12 organizations, institutions of higher education, and other interested parties related to the implementation of the North Carolina World Languages Standard Course of Study (SCoS).

World Language educators are encouraged to browse, reference, download, share, discuss, and adapt resources. Click here to access the resource hub.

NC Project AWARE/ACTIVATE Resource Goes Global

A resource created by Ryan Etheridge, Cleveland Project AWARE/ACTIVATE Director, is going to be used by EdCamp Ukraine. Ryan created Help Now! Bingo and was recently contacted by Trauma Research Institute (TRI) who is coordinating a Ukraine Humanitarian Resiliency Project.

TRI has been providing support to Ukrainian educators in preparing for the upcoming unconventional school year and utilized the Help Now! Bingo resource. TRI partners with EdCamp Ukraine and they will be translating this resource for their teachers.

NCCAT Career Technical Education Teacher of the Year Finalists Named

"Twenty-four teachers from across North Carolina have been selected as finalists for the first North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) 2022 Career Technical Education Teacher of the Year Award in honor of their dedication, innovation, and ability to inspire students to achieve.

One of these talented educators will be named the NCCAT 2022 NC CTE Teacher of the Year. The award is scheduled to be presented on October 6, 2022, at the Bardo Center on the Western Carolina University campus. The finalists will be at the NCCAT campus in Cullowhee for professional development the week of October 3-7, 2022."

Four NC Students Graduate from U.S. Navy's Summer Flight Academy

Congratulations to four North Carolina high school students who recently graduated with a select group of 20 students from the U.S. Navy's elite eight-week Summer Flight Academy. 

Students were selected from across the country to participate in the intensive program where they were required to pass a written exam and complete nearly 42 hours of flight time, including solo flights. Each graduate earned a private pilot's license as well as five college credits. 

The student pilots include:

• Maya Charlton, Porter Ridge High (Union County Public Schools)
• Jadyn Dixon, South Iredell High (Iredell-Statesville Schools)
• Bonnie Frazer, Pamlico County High (Pamlico County Schools)
• Abby Harwick, Pamlico County High (Pamlico County Schools)

What an accomplishment for the four North Carolina students who completed the program!

Student Spotlight: Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools - Parkland Runner Becomes Fastest 16-Year-Old in America

"The fastest 16-year-old in the United States is a student at Parkland High School, and his name is Antwan Hughes Jr.

At the Amateur Athletic Union’s Junior Olympics on Saturday, August 6, Hughes logged a time of 10.48 seconds in the 100-meter dash, beating second-place finisher Jerrae Hawkins by a razor-thin margin of .02 seconds. The road to this national top mark was grueling for Hughes, who lost his entire freshman track season to an injury. Going from recovery to this level of performance took relentless commitment to continual improvement, but if anything, all that lost time left Hughes hungrier for victory than ever."
