NCDPI Office of Charter Schools (OCS) Updates
Scam Alert
One of our charter schools recently received a series of emails which appeared to be from its board chair which requested two "consultant" payments of approximately $50,000 each. Instructions included wiring monies immediately to meet a payment deadline to avoid incurring penalties. Please be diligent with reviewing invoices/emails for payment to ensure you are not a victim of this scam.
State Employees Credit
Union Foundation (SECU) High School Scholarship Opportunity - Final Reminder
Since the SECU Foundation was
established in August 2004, it has awarded annual $10,000 “People Helping
People” four-year scholarships – increasing from two to three in 2014 – to
graduating seniors attending North Carolina Charter Schools. These
scholarships will be awarded to students attending one of the 17 constituent
campuses of the University of North Carolina. These funds are made possible
through the contributions to the Foundation by members of State Employees'
Credit Union.
In order to ensure that each
charter high school’s graduating seniors are able to be considered for this
opportunity, each charter school must establish a Scholarship Selection
Committee. The Committee from each charter high school will be
responsible for nominating a graduating senior for the scholarship.
Each school must submit its nominees to the NCDPI Office of Charter
Schools. The nominee information for each school will be
reviewed/evaluated and the SECU will award scholarships to three candidates
statewide.
The attached information will
provide each school’s Scholarship Selection Committee with eligibility
criteria, procedures, and information.
Key points in the attached
information:
- Each school has flexibility in
establishing its formal application process, but should ensure that every
graduating senior with a minimum GPA of 2.5 is considered for the SECU
Foundation “People Helping People” Scholarship
- Scholarship recipient
information from each school must be received by 5:00 pm EST
on April 13, 2017 to the NCDPI Office of Charter Schools.
- Each school should submit an
alternate or first runner up student in the event the first nominee is
unable to accept the scholarship (if selected).
The Office of Charter Schools
appreciates the dedication and hard work by the members of each school’s
Scholarship Selection Committee. Your diligence and integrity enable the
“People Helping People” scholarship program to continue providing important
support to our college-going students. Please contact Dr. Deanna Townsend-Smith
@ deanna.townsend-smith@dpi.nc.gov if you
have any questions or concerns about the program.
Note:
The SECU Foundation also provides each North Carolina Community College two (2)
$5,000 scholarships. Recipients are selected by the Scholarship Selection
Committee at the community college. If you have a student who will be
attending a community college and exemplifies the membership philosophy of
credit unions, “People Helping People”, please direct them to the Financial Aid
office at the community college.

CECLI Cohort
Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)
The Charter Collaborative Workgroup is pleased to announce the following events that were planned and held. These supports commence the strategic plan designed for all charter schools who are not currently involved in an MTSS cohort. However, if you have a team participating in one of the four MTSS Cohorts, feel free to collaborate by joining any or all of these opportunities:
-
Last month’s Office of Charter Schools Audible was held Tuesday, March 28. Highlights from the webinar included a discussion on the Digital Learning Initiative with Dr. Jeni Corn (Friday Institute) and MTSS with Amy Jablonski (NCDPI). A recording of the MTSS portion is available here: http://mtss.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/Charter#Charter
-
Secondly, we hope you will plan to participate in the first MTSS Charter Twitter Chat on April 24 at noon. The chat will last one hour. If this is your first Twitter Chat , directions are available at http://mtss.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/Charter#Charter . You can also get a sneak peek at the questions to be “tweeted” on the MTSS Wiki under “Communication and Visibility”. One benefit of a Twitter Chat is that you can choose to participate by watching the feed without the pressure of responding to each question.
-
Finally, check out the Charter Pre-Session recording posted on the MTSS Wiki under “Communication and Visibility”: http://mtss.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/Charter#Charter. This session was provided regionally in February through Exceptional Children's Director/Coordinator Meetings. The session provided a brief overview of MTSS and shared the training plan for charters that are not currently in an MTSS Cohort.
In March, an email containing this information went out to all Charter School leads across the state. Thank you for your dedication to creating schools which support all students. Please contact Amy Jablonski, Director of Integrated Academic and Behavior Systems at Amy.Jablonski@dpi.nc.gov for more information.
