Council Names Nick Yates as Town Attorney
At their regular meeting on January 21, 2026, the Chapel Hill Town Council appointed Nicholas Yates (Nick) as Chapel Hill’s next town attorney. Yates will start in his new role on January 22.
“I’m excited to get to know the Town team and the Chapel Hill community.” said Yates. “The Town Attorney’s office supports the work of the Council and all Town departments, so the organizational mission of learning, serving, and working together really resonates with me.”

We're Officially on Bluesky
We've joined Bluesky, a social media platform where we'll be sharing updates and other content in addition to Instagram, Threads, and Facebook. Unlike other social media platforms, Bluesky doesn't require you to create an account to view content, making it a lower barrier place to get content from your local government.

Fordham Sidepath Bridge is Open
Thanks for your patience, Chapel Hill. The Fordham sidepath bridge is now open after a three-week repair!

Council met for a regular meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 21. They proclaimed January 2026 as National Mentoring Month in Chapel Hill and encouraged caring adults to serve as mentors and champions for young people and adults throughout our community.
Council unanimously passed the LUMO omnibus text amendment, which includes streamlining the conditional zoning process, removing Concept Plan reviews, and increasing the allowed size of duplexes and ADUs.

Their regular meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 28, is canceled. They will meet again on February 11 for a work session.

Artist Call: Storm Drain Murals
Spruce up a storm drain and educate the community about our waterways. We're inviting local artists to add to our collection of storm drain murals around Chapel Hill. Murals should celebrate the environment and inspire action. Open to artists ages 18+ within 40 miles of Chapel Hill. Finalists get $100, and selected artist will receive $1,400.

Ongoing
OWASA's W. Rosemary St. project is underway. OWASA is replacing an aging water main along W. Rosemary St. This project will take about 18 months, and it’ll require significant road closures and detours.
- Bike lanes are currently closed; drivers should use caution as bicyclists merge into the travel lane.
- In a few weeks, W. Rosemary St. will be be closed to thru traffic with detours.
Long-term lane closure: S. Columbia St. UNC steam tunnel replacement Dec. 2025 to Dec. 2027 One lane will be closed between South Rd./McCauley St. and Cameron Ave.
Both sides of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and S. Columbia St. from Market St. to Dixie Ln. lane and sidewalk closures Dec. 4 - Jan. 31, 2026, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Parts of both sides of the corridor might have lane and sidewalk closures as part of soil boring for the NSBRT project.
Manning Dr. at Hospital Dr. and East Dr. sidewalk closure Dec. 1, 2025 - Feb. 13, 2026, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. UNC Hospital contractor will waterproof the pedestrian bridge.
Sidewalk on S. Elliott Rd. at Fordham Blvd. Due to the current condition of the railing in this area, this sidewalk is closed.
207-209 Meadowmont Ln. sidewalk and bike lane closure Present to March 2026 Drivers should remain alert to bicyclists merging into the main travel lane.
Columbia St. Carrington Hall work Present to December 2026 A pedestrian detour is in place along S. Columbia St. near Medical Dr. as crews work on Carrington Hall.
