Be Bright at Night
The days are getting shorter which means it's darker longer. Here are some tips to keep in mind during the long nights of fall and winter whether you're driving, walking, biking, or using transit:
-
Stay alert: Focused travel helps everyone get home safely.
-
Follow traffic signals and crosswalk signs: Rules of the road protect all users.
-
Be visible: Reflective gear and lights make a difference.
-
Share the road: Everyone deserves to feel safe, no matter how they travel.

Protect Your Money: Mail Theft
Since July, the Chapel Hill Police Department has received 18 reports of checks being stolen sometime after they were dropped in mailboxes at USPS locations on S. Estes Dr. and Weaver Dairy Rd.
The Police Department is supporting the USPS in investigating these reports of mail theft. The Guardians of the Hill want you to keep these tips in mind:
- When possible, pay your bills online using a secure payment system such as online bill pay or bank transfers
- If you have to write and mail a paper check, here's how to make it more secure:
- Write "For Deposit Only" n the check in the endorsement area.
- Use a security pen with non-washable ink.
- Use an opaque security envelope.
- Use extra tape to seal the envelope.
- Don't write anything on the envelope showing it contains a payment.
- Think about sending the check as either certified or priority mail, especially large amounts of money. These methods have tracking features and may require signatures.
- Check and confirm that the recipient received your payment.
If a check is lost or stolen, notify your bank immediately and include the check number, payee name, amount, and date issued. Then file a police report.

November is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month
The Chapel Hill Fire Department has seen an increase in CO detector calls. Now's a good time to brush up on safety info:
- Carbon monoxide can be produced by fireplaces, gas appliances, attached garages, and fires.
- Since it's odorless, colorless, and tasteless, carbon monoxide detectors are the best way to detect it.
- Unlike smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors may last less than 10 years.
- Change the batteries once a year (unless it has a sealed lithium battery)
