Hello, neighbors! Monday, September 1, is a Town holiday, so most Town offices will be closed. It's also UNC football's home opener, so expect lots of activity downtown. In other news, you can come to an open house to learn about our Transportation and Mobility projects, earn us bragging rights for being sustainable, and turn your lights out for fall migration. |

Town Service Changes for Monday, September 1
Most Town offices will be closed in observance of Labor Day. Please plan for the following service and facility changes:
- Residential trash will not be collected on Monday, September 1. The make-up day is Wednesday, September 3.
- There is no change to yard trimmings collection.
- The library will be closed.
- Chapel Hill Transit will not operate any routes except for the Tar Heel Express to the UNC vs. TCU football game.

Expect Extra Traffic Downtown Sept. 1
UNC football's home opener against TCU is Monday, September 1. Whether you're watching at Kenan or from your favorite spot on Franklin St., give yourself extra time and watch out for increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic downtown:
Special Event parking goes into effect at 2 p.m.
- $5/hr on-street spaces
- $30 for downtown lots and decks
- Pro-tip: Check out the deck at 125 E. Rosemary St. There are over 1,000 spaces.
The Tar Heel Express is another great way to get to the game. Go Heels!

Downtown Police Substation Opening Saturday
On Saturday, we’re opening a Police Substation in the Post Office building on the 100 block of Franklin Street. This will be a place where anyone can speak with police staff, file a report, or connect to resources. To start, it’ll be open during the day and early evening – with a sign out front welcoming people inside. We’ll share an update once we have regular operating hours.

Door-to-Door Walk Builds Connections
Thanks to all the volunteers and community partners who walked door-to-door for the Good Neighbor Initiative (GNI). They shared how to be a good neighbor in neighborhoods where students live among non-students. We're looking forward to building more connections at the GNI Community Cookout on Thursday, September 25 at Hargraves Community Center.

Fall Shred-a-Thon on September 6
On Saturday, September 6, Orange County residents (including Chapel Hill in Durham County), small businesses, and local government employees can shred their confidential documents for free. The Shred-a-Thon will operate at the Eubanks Park and Ride lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or until capacity is met).

Bring Your Stuffie to Meet Pocket Bear
Join us September 10 at 6 p.m. for a program featuring author Katherine Applegate. She'll be sharing her new novel Pocket Bear, an unforgettable tale of bravery, loyalty, and kindness, reminding us that love comes in many forms (sometimes filled with fluff). Bring your favorite stuffie to the event to celebrate Pocket Bear's story, and enter to win a prize from Flyleaf Books.

Dribble for Victory over Cancer
On September 14th, Dribble for Victory Over Cancer is happening on UNC’s campus to raise funds for life-saving pediatric cancer research. Participants will dribble through short on-campus courses. meet college basketball players, coaches, and alumni while giving kids and their families battling cancer a chance for a brighter tomorrow.

Lights Out for Birds
As billions of birds migrate south in the fall, most of them navigate with the night sky. Bright artificial lights and skyglow can disorient them as they fly over cities. You can take simple measures such as turning off or using motion censors on any outdoor lighting to help keep birds on the right paths.

Open House: Transportation and Mobility Projects
Join us on Thursday, September 11, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the library to learn about current and upcoming Transportation and Mobility projects. We'll share information about projects such as the N. Estes Dr. resurfacing and bike lanes project, Pinehurst Dr. resurfacing and bike lanes, the Fordham sidepath, and Ephesus Church Rd. sidewalks.
