► Lori Brenneke’s retirement reception is Friday, June 26 from 2 – 4 pm at DHSS in Jefferson City (flyer)
► New DHSS Website: DHSS’ Office of Public Information will offer LPHAs the opportunity to preview the new DHSS website before it goes public. Details will be provided as soon as the site is open for review.
► 4th of July Fireworks Safety: A toolkit with a template press release, drop in news article, public service announcement scripts, and talking points is now available on the Hub Communications page. Social media is also available on the Resource Library page.
► Listening Session: DHSS’ Office of Minority Health and Health Equity, in partnership with the Office of Epidemiology invites public health partners and the public to a free webinar July 9 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. The listening session is intended to gather input that will help inform the State Health Assessment. Participants will be able to log directly on to the State Health Assessment survey during the webinar. LPHAs are encouraged to share the event flyer and attend the session. Register
► Digital Readiness: DSS received responses to its Digital Readiness Assessment survey from 929 rural facilities. Results indicate a strong foundation for digital health adoption, with 92.4% of responding facilities connected to an electronic health record or clinical documentation system. In addition, 33.8% of facilities reported connectivity to a Health Information Exchange, highlighting a significant opportunity to improve interoperability and data sharing across providers. Findings have been published in the Digital Readiness Survey Assessment Report and will guide the State’s distribution of funds to participating facilities. The survey will be administered annually.

► 6/24/2026: A new CMS report this week projects U.S. healthcare spending will reach $9 trillion by 2034, representing 20.6% of the economy. This is up from $5.3 trillion in 2024. (link)

► 6/24/2026: CDC ends the U.S. response to Hantavirus as the 42-day quarantine period for exposed cruise ship passengers expires. There were no additional cases reported and no one in the U.S. is being monitored at this time. (link)
► 6/24/2026: The Vaccine Integrity Project (VIP) at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) and The Evidence Collective today announced new research efforts to restore trust in immunizations. (link)
► 6/24/2026: Seven years of work result in Colorado receiving federal approval to import lower-cost prescription drugs from Canada to sell in Colorado pharmacies. (link)
► 6/24/2026: A flu outbreak among soldiers at Lackland Air Force Base prompts the military to reinstate required flu vaccinations for all personnel just two months after vaccinations were made voluntary by Defense Secretary Hegseth. (link)
► 6/23/2026: FDA approves the first generic version of rifapentine (Priftin) to treat active TB in adolescents and adults, and latent TB infection in patients as young as 2 years old. (link)
► 6/23/2026: A COVID vaccine study blocked from being published in the MMWR is released in JAMA Network Open and shows that Covid vaccines reduced the likelihood of severe illness by about half among adults last fall and winter. (link)
MISSOURI NEWS
► 6/24/2026: When the annual SNAP cost-sharing requirement begins in October 2027, states will be expected to reduce their error rates or pay to provide food aid to lower-income residents. Missouri’s overall error rate in FY2025 was 8.67% compared to the highest rate in Alaska (23.15%) and the lowest in South Dakota (2.47%). (link)
► 6/24/2026: St. Louis County Council passes $3 million jail healthcare funding bill to keep 23 nurses at the jail and juvenile detention center through a contract with the St Louis County Public Health Center. (link)

► Jul 29, Overdose Fatality Review Summit, hosted by DHSS Overdose Data to Action in States team and Overdose Response Strategy (ORS) partners. On site training in Jefferson City for up to 100 Missouri LPHA staff and local partners (coroners/medical examiners, public safety, EMS, hospital ER, behavioral health) to increase the number of local overdose fatality review (OFR) boards in Missouri. Learn what an OFR is and how it can be used to guide overdose prevention and response within a community. Identify local partnerships to establish and conduct OFRs, understand overdose data systems and how to use the data to effectively guide the OFR process, understand how to prioritize and select cases for review, and see how an OFR operates. Register by June 30.

► Aug 5 – 6: Seasoned Administrator / All In Meeting, hosted by DHSS, in Jefferson City.
► Sep 1 – 2, Fall Preparedness Summit, in Jefferson City, hosted by DHSS’ Office of Emergency Coordination with the Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) Program and the Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP). This will replace the traditional Fall Planners Meeting. Location, detailed agenda, and session times are being finalized, but attendees can expect engaging sessions on emergency preparedness and networking opportunities with partners across the state.
