DHSS UPDATES
Message from Director Willson, Oct 1, 2025. Following topics are discussed: Federal shutdown, ACIP updates, KFF/Washington Post vaccine survey, Missouri agriculture and food systems, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, DHSS Team Members of the Month, Changes to CDC Notice of Award termination provision, and Residents’ Rights Month.
Additional accreditation funding will be available soon through PHIG. To apply for funding, complete a short survey explaining your current progress toward accreditation and submit a budget with narrative on how funds will be spent. Applications are due by October 24. Funding decisions will be made October 30. Contact Nicole Cooper with questions.
Friday Facts will get a facelift on October 3 and will begin being delivered through the GovDelivery system. If you are currently receiving Friday Facts through email, you do not need to take any action to continue receiving it. If have not been receiving it, but would like to, subscribe through GovDelivery on the Friday Facts webpage.
Drug overdose deaths in Missouri dropped from 1,948 in 2023 to 1,450 in 2024, according to new data from DHSS. Even though opioid deaths dropped 36%, 1 in 47 deaths statewide are still attributed to opioid-involved overdose. (pdf) (live interactive report) (data dashboard)
WIC food package changes go into effect this week, including moving to store brands for things like hot and cold cereal, providing shredded cheese instead of block cheese, and removing yogurt, goat milk, and evaporated milk. (link)
SNAP: Governor Kehoe announces a refocus on Missouri's SNAP program to support the purchase of healthy foods. (link)
Grant Management and Compliance Training, hosted by Missouri Public Health Institute as part of DHSS's LPHA Incentive Funding. This free training is designed for local governmental public health practitioners looking to improve their agency's grant management and compliance. Attend on part 1 and one part 2 session to be eligible for incentive funding.

Clinical care refers to any activity related to direct medical treatment or testing and is provided by trained or licensed health professionals in hospital or clinical settings. Oct 15 – 16, DIMENSIONS: Tobacco-Free Advanced Techniques Train-the-Trainer, hosted by DHSS at the Lodge of the Four Seasons in Lake Ozark. This one and a half day training covers tobacco fundamentals, tobacco addiction, tobacco treatment strategies and a motivational intervention for tobacco cessation. Trainees will also be trained to facilitate the DIMENSIONS Tobacco Free Group – a 6-week group curriculum. The Advanced Techniques training is a train-the-trainer model, meaning participants will leave the training with the materials and knowledge to train other at their organization. Every trainee will have download access to the program materials at the completion of training. Register
Oct 29 – 30, TEEX: Medical Countermeasures: Point of Dispensing (POD), Planning and Response, Springfield, MO. Hosted by the Region D LPHA administrators. Learn how to coordinate plans to provide mass distribution of medical countermeasures in response to a large-scale public health incident in order to meet CDC’s 48-hour standard. There is no cost to attend, but class size is limited to 35 participants. Register
