Minnesota Department of Revenue

The Minnesota Department of Revenue is sending letters to about 11,000 renters who may qualify for a 2019 Renter’s Property Tax Refund. We attached a copy of the letter.

Why is the department contacting clients?

Clients will receive this letter if their 2018 Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP) indicates that a government housing agency paid part of their rent. After changing the CRP’s format for 2019, we found that some landlords may have listed incorrect amounts on line B of the 2019 CRP.

Line B of the CRP is only for assistance from Minnesota’s Housing Support program (formerly known as Group Residential Housing or GRH) paid directly to the landlord on the renter’s behalf. Other forms of housing support, such as Section 8, were being added to line B of the 2019 CRP in error.

If renters did not file a 2019 Property Tax Refund return because there was an incorrect amount on line B of the 2019 CRP, they may be eligible for the refund.

What if my client has an incorrect amount on line B?

See our February 19 bulletin for guidance.
