This week, the Minnesota Department of Revenue will begin sending 33,000 letters to taxpayers who may qualify for a 2018 Minnesota Property Tax Refund.
Clients may receive this letter if they did not file a 2018 Property Tax Refund because the inclusion of medical and dental premiums in their nontaxable income put them over the refund’s income limit. For reference, we have attached a copy of the letter.
What do I need to know?
Our instructions for 2018 Form M1PR, Homestead Credit Refund (for Homeowners) and Renter’s Property Tax Refund, listed “pretax medical and dental premiums” as an example of reportable nontaxable income. These premiums should not be reported as nontaxable income.
If your clients did not file 2018 Property Tax Refund returns because they included pretax medical and dental premiums as nontaxable income, they may now be eligible for the refund.
Do my clients qualify for a 2018 Property Tax Refund?
To qualify, your clients must meet certain household income requirements. Qualifications will differ depending on whether they rent or own their home. To determine if your clients qualify:
