Today's COVID-19 updates include:

  • Total approximate number of completed tests: 4,326,347

This total reflects only the results from laboratory testing. There are more cases in Minnesota, and the virus is circulating in communities. It is important for everyone to follow advice on community mitigation and social distancing to help us flatten the case curve.

Governor has launched a public dashboard which includes race data of cases: Minnesota COVID-19 Public Dashboard.

CDC Guidance Changes

We have been hearing that CDC is putting out new guidance about shortening quarantine in certain situations. We will review the guidance when available and make recommendations over the next few days. We know this may not be a simple change. For the time being, people should continue following the current guidelines to stay home for 14 days.

Chronic Disease and COVID-19 well-being info

MDH has created new resources to help people with long-term health conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Social media toolkit with graphics:  This toolkit is intended to be adapted and shared for your audience. Please feel free to edit the messages and share widely with your community via social media, e-newsletters, etc.

Do you know your health risk? (PDF): Many people with long-term health conditions like type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure or kidney disease don’t know they have them. These conditions could put you at greater risk for severe illness if you get COVID-19. Knowing if you are at risk now can help you take steps to reduce your risk and be more prepared if you become sick with COVID-19.

Managing your health during COVID-19 (PDF): Everyone is at risk for getting COVID-19 if they come into contact with the virus. Some people are more likely than others to get very sick. As you get older, your risk for severe illness from COVID-19 increases. Here are some steps you can take to keep healthy this winter.

As testing options expand, updated testing criteria can help Minnesotans evaluate when they should get tested and which option may be best

As Minnesota continues a new dial-back period to slow the state’s alarming rate of COVID-19 transmission and prevent the health care system from being overwhelmed, Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) officials are issuing updated testing recommendations on who needs to be tested, when to be tested, and which option may be best.

According to MDH Assistant Commissioner Dan Huff, the COVID-19 testing criteria help people evaluate when it is necessary to receive a test and help ensure those getting tested have the fastest turnaround time possible.

“Testing is an important tool for slowing the spread of COVID-19 and we are committed to providing no-barrier access for everyone who needs it,” Huff said. “We don’t want people to be confused by their options - it can be difficult to know which test people should take, and when exactly they should take it. Our updated criteria will help people more quickly determine what’s best for them in their situation.”

Minnesotans now have several accessible choices available to them, including 20 longer-term community testing sites offering nasal and saliva testing, a mail-order program, and clinics and hospitals across the state. The updated recommendations include a list of who should seek testing as well as suggestions on when to get tested and which option to use.

Huff pointed out that during the dial-back period it is important to prioritize workers in industries that remain open.

“We talk regularly about health care workers as our front-line heroes, but that label also applies to our child care workers, retail and grocery store workers, public safety, and others working to keep our critical infrastructure up and running,” Huff said. “We need them, along with anyone with symptoms or who was exposed to someone who tested positive, to continue having access to reliable and quick testing.”

Minnesotans have a role to play in helping the new recommendations work best for those in critical infrastructure roles. By diligently avoiding social gatherings during the dial-back period, they can reduce their need for testing due to exposure. This will help maintain the fastest turnaround time possible for those who do need to get tested.

Download Minnesota’s COVID-19 Exposure Notification App Today

The State of Minnesota launched COVIDaware MN today, an app that will notify you if you’ve been near someone who tested positive for COVID-19. If you test positive, you can use the app to anonymously notify anyone you’ve been near. We encourage all state employees to download the exposure notification app today.

Minnesota’s free exposure notification app, COVIDaware MN, will help us all do our part. Whether you are in the office, working from home, or out in the field, your work is critical for Minnesotans to get the services they need. We want to make sure you are staying as safe as possible and can take action to keep your family and community safe. When we understand our exposure risk, we can all make more informed decisions about our health.

Download the free COVIDaware MN app from the iphone App Store or the Android Google Play Store and encourage your colleagues to do the same. The app is free and does not collect any personal information or track your location.

Grants/Funding

COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program

The MN Housing Finance Agency (MHFA) continues to accept applications for the COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program. The COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program provides housing assistance payments to help prevent eviction, prevent homelessness, and maintain housing stability for eligible renters and homeowners. Local administrators will review applications from individuals and families requesting assistance, verify eligibility, and process payments for eligible expenses on behalf of households. This is an incredible resource for those adversely affected by the pandemic, and the Governor continues to encourage Minnesotans to use the funds available to them to weather this storm.

To begin the process, people can:

  • Call 211 (Toll Free: 1.800.543.7709; Local: 651.291.0211)
  • Visit 211unitedway.org
  • Text "MNRENT" or "MNHOME" to 898-211
