IOwAs Needed to Transfer Access to Secure Systems and Reports

On September 17, 2019, the Minnesota Department of Education sent communication to superintendents and charter school directors stating that the education Identity and Access Management (EDIAM) Security system will manage user accounts and authorization to secure website systems for the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB), and P20W (SLEDS and ECLDS). Over the course of the fall, EDIAM Security will replace the current Minnesota Identity Management System (MIDMS) Security system, which manages user access to over 50 secure web applications and over 200 secure reports. TRAINING

Working Through the Legal Framework of School Discipline

Time out of school has huge implications for student achievement and future success. When done well, school discipline policies should have a positive impact on school climate, keep students engaged in learning, improve student achievement and graduation rates, and increase students’ chances for lifelong success.

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) has developed a training session that will help school administrators better understand the Minnesota’s Pupil Fair Dismissal Act (PFDA) and federal laws that comprise the legal framework for addressing student conduct, with an emphasis on the importance of alternatives to suspension and the use of positive behavioral supports.

Information will be presented on topics related to the use of disciplinary action in schools, including due process protections for students, suspension procedures, expulsion and exclusion hearings, and a brief review of discipline data in Minnesota. The overview also includes alternative education service requirements, manifestation determinations, and 45-school-day placements as they relate to students with individualized education programs (IEPs). The presentation of information will be followed by an opportunity for administrators to apply the legal framework in structured case studies facilitated by MDE staff. Board of School Administrators (BOSA) credit will be available.
