Enhancing your workplace with a (social) recognition program

well done

As we climb out of the pandemic and reconnect with others, we have an amazing opportunity to practice appreciation and recognition. Being appreciated is a basic human need and is tied to both wellbeing and job satisfaction. Recent studies show that if employees feel recognized they are more likely to keep their jobs, less likely to burn out, and more likely to be productive.

“The deepest principle of human nature is a craving to be appreciated.” – William James

Does your workplace have a recognition program? Does it get used? Have you considered adding a social recognition component? Read on to learn more about the importance of social recognition and appreciation.

Appreciation and social recognition vs. traditional employee recognition

Yes, there is a difference. Traditional employee recognition programs are typically set up to award employees for years of service, extra effort, leadership, or innovation. They are typically “top-down” from management to employee. Social recognition is broader, includes peer-to-peer appreciation and recognition and can be given in any direction. Both forms of recognition are important for engaging employees and building a great workplace culture.

  • Get leadership support. Share the article Why Employee Recognition is Important with managers.
  • Check in with employees — ask what types of awards or recognition are meaningful. See 21 Employee Recognition Ideas to Keep Your Employees Motivated.
  • Help folks understand that the heart of the program is connecting them not only to your organization’s purpose and success but to each other. Help them understand the purpose of peer-to-peer recognition and appreciation. The goal is to make everyone feel like they belong, contribute, and are seen, valued, and connected.
