As 2020 nears an end, we recognize what a year it has been with a global pandemic, tragedies, and extreme challenges. Now is the time to reflect on our collective resilience and innovation as we each continue to navigate this new world. We have seized opportunities to create new ways to sustain our missions, conduct business, deliver services, and be responsive to those we work with and serve. Collaboration and innovation have been essential.
The Compliance Toolkit is a regular feature of the Board Bulletin that will provide you with tools for handling common ethical dilemmas and issues related to the Standards of Practice found in the Minnesota Social Work Practice Act. Consider the following scenario:
I am licensed independent clinical social worker (“LICSW”) working for a small agency providing individual therapy to adults and adolescents. With the pandemic, I am exclusively meeting with clients via video conferencing using my cell phone. In sessions with some of my adolescent clients, I have noticed they are occasionally in a communal space in their home, like a kitchen, and I can hear other people in the background. I am concerned about confidentiality and am not sure what to do.
Also, some of my clients have temporarily left Minnesota and are staying with family in other states. Am I able to continue seeing these clients via video conference or phone while they are in another state?
MEET THE BOSW ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The BOSW Advisory Committee was created in 1994 and is comprised of representatives from 11 different professional social work organizations. The Advisory Committee holds public meetings every other month, and is currently Chaired by Karen Goodenough, Executive Director of NASW MN. This group brings insight from various social work practices and advises the BOSW on professional and policy issues affecting social work. The BOSW truly values the engagement of the Advisory Committee which provides an effective communication channel between the BOSW and the organizations representing licensees and members.
In recent years the Board’s Advisory Committee has been instrumental in the development of the annual BOSW Customer Satisfaction Survey, the “Know Your Licensing Law” online learning tool (to be launched in mid-2021), and members have actively participated on the Board’s Legislative and Rules Committee to represent stakeholder groups.
Thank you for your valuable work AC members!
