Call for Committee Members

At the November Michigan Aeronautics Commission (MAC) meeting, Chair Carter established two new MAC Committees and re-established one existing MAC Committee to help ensure aviation policies remain aligned with the current state of the industry and emerging aviation trends. This is a call for membership to these established MAC Committees.

  • The General Aviation Advisory Committee – Chaired by Commissioner Brian Smith
  • The Commercial Aviation Advisory Committee – Chaired by Commissioner Rick Fiddler
  • The Aviation Career Pipeline Committee – Chaired by Commissioner Kelly Burris

Membership

The committees will be made up of members of the aviation industry and supported by MDOT Office of Aeronautics (Aero) staff. Any person employed by the aviation industry in any capacity, currently involved in aviation education or workforce development, or with an aviation background may apply. A diverse cross section of aviation-related members is key to providing input from all perspectives. Membership will be for a one-year term, or as determined by the committee chair.

Application Process

To be considered, please complete and submit the attached MAC Committee Application, along with any additional documentation to be considered, to Alicia Morrison, Commission Analyst, at MorrisonA5@Michigan.gov by December 31, 2024. Membership applications will be reviewed and approved by the committee chair, MAC Director and Aero staff.

General Meeting Information

Committee meeting dates will be scheduled by Aero staff on a regular basis and published for the entire year. Meetings may be held via Teams, at the Office of Aeronautics, or at airport locations, as appropriate. Committee work will be reported at each MAC meeting by the chair or a designee.

Committee Goals

While each committee may set its own specific goal, the collective goal of these MAC committees is to work in collaboration with MDOT Aero to provide review and input by a diverse group of knowledgeable participants, on priority issues and initiatives impacting Michigan aviation; and to report these issues and initiatives to the Commission as a whole.

Below are examples of topics currently being explored for committee involvement:

  • State Licensing Standards Update
    • Review current State Licensing Standards for all types of licensed aeronautical facilities and make recommendations to ensure existing licensing standards remain applicable and supportive of a safe, efficient Michigan aviation system.
    • Make recommendations for integrating uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) and other emerging aviation technologies into the existing licensing structure.
  • Michigan Aviation System Plan Goal (MASP) Review
    • Review and support potential modification of current 2017 MASP System Goals.
    • Ensure System Goals support Aeronautics ongoing strategy to deploy limited capital development assistance to Michigan’s airport system.
    • Provide relevant recommendations on integrating UAS and other emerging aviation technologies into the updated MASP.
  • Workforce Development and Aviation Education Support
    • Evaluate existing workforce development initiatives to ensure awareness of the Commission’s role.
    • Guide development of grant resources to bolster the aviation workforce.
