Central Sanitary Landfill Phase 1 Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Investigation Sample Results

The first phase of drinking water well sampling near the Central Sanitary Landfill is complete.  Residents who had their water tested have received their results.

All results were below the Lifetime Health Advisory (LHA) level of 70 parts per trillion (ppt) for combined perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS).  PFAS was not found in most of the drinking water wells.

As a precaution, residents who had PFAS detected in their water sample have been offered filters.  This is being done until we can complete the investigations and monitoring necessary to ensure that PFAS levels will remain below the LHA level of 70 ppt.

Several more drinking water wells are being sampled to help define where PFAS is present, that may be related to the landfill.

June 18 Open House and Public Meeting

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), and the Mid-Michigan District Health Department (MMDHD), along with Central Sanitary Landfill, are hosting an open house and public meeting on June 18, 2018, at:

The community open house is from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. and the public meeting is from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.

The meeting will focus on the PFAS investigation results to date and next steps. The open house is for residents who may have questions about their test results.  The MDHHS and the MMDHD will be available to answer health questions.
