Bloodroot and Trailing Arbutus are in bloom now in the woodlands of southern Maine. Watch your step and look for them along trail edges and in areas of dappled light.

Trailing Arbutus is the first flower I look for in the springtime. Its oval leathery leaves and waxy white or pink flowers brighten the forest floor. I was taught while just a toddler to look for it by my Aunt Kay, who adored the flower.
