Message from Secretary Anthony Woods:

DVMF LOGO white background

Dear Friends,

As the new school year kicks off in Maryland, I want to wish our veteran and military families a successful and fulfilling year ahead. For our new military families who are calling our state home for the first time, we are thrilled to welcome you to our Maryland military-connected community.

Transitioning to a new school can be challenging, especially for military-connected students who move frequently. That’s why I’m proud to highlight Maryland’s Purple Star Schools program, which recognizes schools that go above and beyond to support these students and their families. This program ensures that military-connected students have the resources, guidance, and support they need to thrive academically and socially.

If your school is committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for military-connected students, I encourage them to apply for the Purple Star designation in the upcoming year. Together, we can make sure that every military family feels at home in Maryland.

Best wishes for a successful school year!

Sincerely,

Tony

PFC Dent funeral

Secretary Anthony Woods attended the interment of U.S. Army Private 1st Class Lemuel Dent, Jr. yesterday. In the center of this photo in Mr. Donald Dent, nephew of PFC Lemuel Dent and on the right is Ms. Dimitra Johnson, Superintendent of Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery.

Pfc. Dent was reported Missing in Action during World War II and was accounted for on February 2, 2024.

In February 1945, Dent was assigned to the Company L, 3rd Battalion, 366th Infantry Regiment, 92nd Infantry Division “Buffalo Soldiers” in the European Theater. On Feb. 8, Dent was killed near the Cinquale Canal, north of Viareggio, Italy.  Pfc. Dent was on board a tank that was crossing the canal, when it was struck by enemy mortar, machine gun, and artillery fire. His body was not recovered, and the Germans never reported him a prisoner of war.

Following the war on May 5, 1945, the American Graves Registration Command (AGRC), Army Quartermaster Corps, was the organization tasked with recovering missing American personnel in the European Theater. AGRC investigators recovered a set of remains, designated as X-124 Castelfiorentino, from a single gravesite approximately 2 miles west of Pietrasanta and 500 yards north of the Cinquale Canal. The investigators initially associated the remains as possibly belonging to a soldier of the 92nd Infantry Division, but didn’t have enough identifying data to make a positive identification. The remains were permanently interred at what is now Florence American Cemetery.

In June 2022, the Department of Defense and American Battle Monuments Commission exhumed the remains of X-124 from Florence American Cemetery for forensic analysis. Historians at the DPAA have determined that the X-124 remains most likely belonged to a member of 3rd Battalion, 366th Infantry Regiment, killed in the vicinity of the Cinquale Canal in December 1944 or February 1945. The remains were sent to the DPAA laboratory for identification.

To identify Dent’s remains, scientists from DPAA used anthropological analysis. Additionally, scientists from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis.

Pfc. Dent’s name is recorded on the Tablets of the Missing at Florence American Cemetery, an American Battle Monuments Commission site in Impruneta, Italy, along with others still missing from WWII. A rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate he has been accounted for.

Pfc. Dent was interred at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, Maryland on September 5, 2024.

Maryland dedicates nearly $2 million to train cyber workforce

New funding is available through the Maryland Department of Labor to help develop cyber ranges throughout the state.

As part of the Accelerating Cyber Careers program , Labor is providing $1.8 million to build and expand the use of cyber ranges  in Maryland. Cyber ranges are interactive simulations that allow users to experience hands-on learning techniques in a secure environment. These facilities can help train workers looking to join the cyber sector or expand their skill set, generating a robust network of cybersecurity professionals throughout Maryland.

“Employers want cyber professionals with hands-on experience. Cyber ranges can help provide that experience to complement the technical skills learned in the classroom,” said Labor Secretary Portia Wu. “Maryland will continue to invest in innovative approaches to cultivate top cyber talent while providing access to high-demand, high-growth jobs.”

The state has consistently received credit for its tech expertise and educated workers in recent years. With Maryland being named #1 for STEM concentration and #2 for its tech talent pipeline, and the D.C. region being named #1 globally for its cyber talent, this new state initiative will continue to raise the bar for growing a highly-skilled workforce in the Mid Atlantic.

Celebrate Monarchs and Milkweed at Merkle!

Butterflies are one of the most iconic pollinators because of their unique, long migration from Maryland to Mexico, where they spend the winter. Part of what makes these butterflies so special is that their caterpillars can only feed on one host plant, milkweed, which they need to become butterflies and complete their migration.

Join us Sept. 28 for the fifth annual Monarchs and Milkweed festival at Merkle Natural Resources Management Area in Prince George's County to celebrate monarch butterflies with crafts, games, butterfly tagging, costumes, and more! Read more.

The Baltimore Veterans Treatment Court is seeking military-related community service opportunities in Howard, Carroll, Harford, and Baltimore Counties. As you may know, the VTC has been serving justice-involved veterans in the greater Baltimore area since 2015. All veterans who enter our program are required to volunteer 20 hours of their time giving back to their community, and we’ve found that many of our participants will exceed this obligation if they get connected to work that supports their fellow veterans. As we continue to expand the community we serve, we’ve recognized the need for volunteer options for participants residing outside of the city.

If you are connected to any organizations serving the veteran community in Central Maryland that have an ongoing need for volunteer support, please contact Justin McNabb at 410-895-1393 or justin.mcnabb@uwcm.org

News from Serving Together

At ServingTogether, we provide local veteran resources, information and services to active duty service members, veterans, family members and caregivers in the DMV region free of charge. We do this through coordinated care, community education (Mental Health First Aid, QPR and other classes) and our numerous veterans’ collaboratives. We also provide mental health assessments as a recipient of the Staff Sergent Fox grant program.

Community Resources

ServingTogether, a program of EveryMind, was launched in 2011 to coordinate community-based resources for service members, veterans and their families in the MD/NoVa/DC region. Our mission is to make it easier for all those who have served in the Armed Forces, National Guard or Reserves, and their families to access the local services they need.  We have hundreds of dedicated non-profit, state and federal partners that can help with needs from A to Z!

To contact the Care Coordinators, please visit www.servingtogetherproject.org and complete the Get Assistance Now form on the website, or call 1-855-738-7176.
