Veterans Day 2020 Edition

Secretary Owings at Charlotte Hall

On Sunday, October 25, 2020, Charlotte Hall Veterans Home residents and staff were surprised by a parade of 40 vehicles, including Police, Fire and Rescue equipment, a motorcycle, and classic cars and trucks. MDVA Secretary George W. Owings, stood in the back of a pickup truck in the rain, saluting the residents as the parade traveled around the entire facility. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Commissioners and staff of Leonardtown, who coordinated the parade.

MDOT MTA Providing Free Rides for Veterans and Active-Duty Military on Veterans Day, November 11

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) will offer free transit rides for all U.S. military veterans, active-duty military, and members of the National Guard and Reserves on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2020. Offering a day of free, unlimited transit rides is a way to honor the commitment and service of America’s military personnel.

“For the second year in a row, MDOT MTA is proud to have veterans and military personnel ride for free on the day that recognizes their service to our nation,” said MDOT MTA Administrator Kevin Quinn. “Now more than ever, we want to show our gratitude for their sacrifice and commitment to our country.

Free transit rides will be available on MDOT MTA Local Bus, Metro SubwayLink, Light RailLink, MARC Train and Commuter Bus. To qualify for a free ride, active and retired military members will need to show an ID under one of three classifications:

·       U.S. Department of Defense issued ID (Armed Forces/Uniformed Services/Military Retiree);

·       U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs issued ID;

·       Maryland MVA Veteran designation on a driver’s license or state ID.

“Men and women who serve in the military help protect the freedoms and opportunities Americans hold dear,” said MDOT Secretary Greg Slater. “We’re proud to give them a lift on Veterans Day. It’s a small way to say thanks for the lift they give us all.”

While military personnel can ride for free, the CharmPass mobile ticketing app provides convenient ticketing solutions for all riders. For schedule information and to plan a trip, visit mta.maryland.gov. Riders can also download the Transit app for free in the Google Play or App store to see real-time bus arrival information.

MDOT MTA is one of the largest multi-modal transit systems in the United States. MDOT MTA operates LocalLink and commuter buses, Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink, Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) Train service and a comprehensive Mobility (paratransit) system. MDOT MTA’s goal is to provide safe, efficient and reliable transit across Maryland with world-class customer service. Community News

Active duty Navy Officer and Annapolis resident, Jordan Foley, started a nonprofit helping military veterans and spouses start careers in the culinary arts - VIDEO (meet the founders and their mission). His company, Chow, gives veterans and spouses the opportunity to own and operate food trucks. They bridge the gap between a veteran leaving the service and entering the culinary industry through their Food Truck Training Program (FTTP). The FTTP sets up veterans/spouses with a food truck, menu, branding, supply chain support, food safety training, and Chow's logistic support. The goal is once the veteran/spouse has learned enough about the food truck industry, they are free to pursue their own business venture, perhaps opening a truck or restaurant of their own - view the 90 second FTTP video here. They are $35,000 away from purchasing their first truck, which will be their flagship mobile training unit. They accept donations online and you can contact info@letschow.org about mailing in donations. Chow is a 501(c)3 nonprofit and all donations are tax deductible. Learn more about Chow's other initiatives below:
  • Chow has relationships with Anne Arundel Community College's culinary arts program. Currently, they help veterans/spouses apply for a full scholarship in entrepreneurial and culinary arts studies. The veteran/spouse receives up to $12,000 to pursue their educational goals.
  • Chow serves food out of their Cheverly kitchen monthly to partons and periodically to the homeless community in Silver Spring. These events provide opportunities for veterans and military spouses to get vital kitchen service experience. They encourage veterans/spouses to volunteer to get valuable restaurant experience. If you are a donor, for $400 you can provide over 200 meals for the homeless community. Donate here.
  • Purchasing cookware as a gift for the holiday season? Use this Pampered Chef link to buy your gifts for loved ones and Chow receives 15% of all purchases. Chow also supports cookware donations directly to veterans and military spouses interested in starting businesses in the culinary arts. Learn more about their veteran of the month and how you can buy him cookware to start his business here.
If you would like to schedule a consultation with Chow fill out their contact form. For donation and support inquiries, please email info@letschow.org.
