Greetings District 8 Neighbors!
I hope you are enjoying your summer. We are one month away from the start of the 2021-2022 school year, which begins on September 8, 2021. In this issue, we are providing helpful information to prepare for the school year and additional updates.

I want to inform you of changes within our District 8 Team.
Demetrius Keller served as our Constituent Services Program Manager. Demetrius was very instrumental with our "Moving Forward" webinar series, food distribution and pandemic services, supporting the District 8 vaccination clinic and managing the District 8 GADA Drone Academy. We are excited that Demetrius completed his MSW - Social Work and has accepted a position where he will be working with at risk youth starting this week.
Marise Awai-Bourne has been an integral part of the District 8 Team since 2018. Marise has served as the District 8 Legislative Aide and the Scheduler for Council Member Monique Anderson-Walker. Graphic design projects Marise created were an extension of the D-8 brand. Marise is leaving the District 8 office on August 13, 2021, to focus on her DMV Cake Art business customizing creative and delectable desserts.
We wish Demetrius and Marise all the best in their new endeavors and thank them for their contributions to the District 8 team!

Due to a continued rise in COVID-19 metrics, Prince George's County will reinstitute an indoor public mask mandate beginning Sunday, August 8 at 5:00 pm. All residents and visitors over the age of 5 will be required to wear masks in all indoor public venues and businesses in Prince George's County, even if they are fully vaccinated. I co-hosted a District 8 Bike Ride, on the Henson Creek Trail, with Commissioner Rodney Ellis, Harris County, in support of the Texas delegation fighting against voter suppression on Wednesday, August 4th. I attended a dinner on August 1st that Commissioner Ellis hosted for the Texas lawmakers and for local leaders.
The Texas delegation left Texas on July 12th to deny a quorum needed to pass new voting restrictions. State Rep, Dr. Alma Allen, D-Houston shared “We have one goal we’re focusing on: that goal is to attain the freedom to vote for all persons.”
The August 4th ride was to show our solidarity with the delegation and appreciation of their sacrifice and commitment in standing for right. #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct #ForThePeopleAct Special thanks to Commissioner Rodney Ellis for his leadership, the delegation and local supporters, M-NCPPC Park and Recreation, Park Rangers and Maryland National Capitol Park Police for your support on this memorable day.
 
MahoganyBooks had their Grand Opening at their District 8 National Harbor location on August 8, 2021. We are delighted to welcome this family owned bookstore, that serves all ages and features A-list luminaries, new voices and local authors. Derrick and Ramunda Young are Co-owners/Founders with their daughter Mahogany. Derrick grew up in District 8 and attended Oxon Hill, Crossland and Suitland High Schools. Giving back to the community that shaped him is a goal that has come to fruition.
A Proclamation was presented, on behalf of County Executive Alsobrooks, declaring August 8th as "Black Books Matter Day" in Prince George's County.

GIRLKIN Lashes celebrated their Grand Opening at the National Harbor on July 31, 2021. The District 8 store is the fourth location for this female business owner. GIRLKIN Lashes provides lash extensions, brows/permanent makeup, makeup, manicures, pedicures, waxing and facial services.
I want to take a moment to acknowledge Simone Biles bravery in taking care of herself on a very public stage. "Your Health Is Your Wealth". The strength Simone exhibited in making the best decision for herself, at a very critical time, during the Olympics spoke volumes and showed our youth and the world that self care is a priority. Mental health is an area I have focused on in our communities for years and this remains one of my top priorities. Protect your peace! Thank You Simone!

Watching the Men’s 4x100 medley relay win Gold tonight made me reflect on the 1996 Olympics, where the Men’s 4x100 won the medal. Mark Henderson, fellow Prince Georgian, my neighbor and former swim coach was on the Butterfly leg of the medley. He has had a tremendous impact on me. Lots of life lessons learned in the pool related to perseverance, preparedness and sportsmanship. Thank you Mark!!!

He is an Olympic gold medalist, three-time World champion, two-time Pan American Games champion, four-time Pan Pacific champion and five-time U.S. National champion. PGCPS Student Transfer Season
PGCPS will accept student transfer requests for the 2021-2022 school year from July 26 (8 a.m.) through August 13 (11:59 p.m.), 2021. Parents and guardians of students currently enrolled at a PGCPS school can submit transfer requests electronically through the SchoolMax Family Portal. Portal access is limited to parents and legal guardians. Parents or legal guardians must have an active SchoolMax Family Portal account (username and password).
Parents and legal guardians of students that are not currently enrolled but have a student identification number can request a student transfer form by sending an email to Student.Transfers@pgcps.org or contacting our office at 301-567-8751. Completed forms must be emailed to Student.Transfers@pgpcs.org. Students entering Kindergarten and not currently enrolled in a PGCPS PreK or Early Childhood Center (ECC) program must request a transfer form. Paper forms will not be processed for students currently enrolled in a PGCPS school.
The Office of Student Records, Transfers and Archival Services (OSRTAS) will not accept transfer requests to schools that exceed state-rated capacity. Visit the Student Transfer Request webpage to view a list of schools eligible to receive transfer students and details, transfer process instructions and FAQs.
Every effort will be made to mail decision letters prior to school opening. The Office of Student Records, Transfer and Archival Services can not be held responsible for receipt of notifications if addresses have not been updated in the Student Information System (SIS) SchoolMax. Parents and legal guardians must ensure residence addresses are captured accurately in SchoolMax.

July 21, 2021 – WSSC Water is urging customers who are behind on their water and sewer bills to establish convenient payment plans before water service turnoffs resume. Turnoffs for delinquent commercial and government accounts will resume on August 1; residential accounts on September 13.

The Prince George's County 2021 Emergency Rental and Utilities Assistance Program (ERAP) helps eligible households who have been financially impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The program provides payment assistance for renters who need help with rent and utilities.
Applications will be accepted until funds are no longer available.

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) has scheduled public hearings as part of the toll rate range setting process public comment period for proposed High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes in Phase 1 South: American Legion Bridge I-270 to I-370. The public comment period opened May 20 and continues through August 12. Written and voicemail comments are now being accepted, and the hearings will provide additional opportunity to comment on the proposed toll rate ranges for the record through public or one-on-one testimony.
The MDTA will hold two in-person testimony hearing sessions, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 12, at the Hilton Washington D.C./Rockville Hotel & Executive Meeting Center in Rockville, and two call-in testimony hearing sessions, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 14. During the hearings there will be no formal presentation and no responses to questions can be given. The public can listen live to the hearings via telephone or livestream at mdta.maryland.gov/ALB270TollSetting.

As of June 14th, the operating hours for the Southern Regional Aquatic Wellness Center will be:
Monday/Wednesday: 9am-9pm
Tuesday/Thursday/Friday: 6am-9pm
Saturday: 9am-6pm
Sunday: 11:30am-6pm
Please note there may be scheduled programs during certain hours of the day. It is best to contact and/or visit the facility to confirm the pool availability to meet your specific needs. Check out the website here https://bit.ly/3wJSuNQ
In the evenings, the community will have access and be able to use the facility during the following times:
- 6pm-8pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays (2 lap lanes will be available for drop-in lap swimming & water walking)
- 8pm-9pm on Mondays - Thursdays (entire lap pool and warm water pool available for drop-in use)
- 12pm-9pm on Fridays (general swim which includes lap swimming and water walking)
