News You Can Use

ATTENTION RESIDENTS!
Prince George's County is gearing up for the 2020 Census and your participation is crucial to vital to ensuring our community’s well-being and overall quality of life.
The U.S. census is a national population count that occurs every 10 years. It counts every person living in the United States and the five U.S. territories. The census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support for you and your community. Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data.
The results of the census also determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, and they are used to draw congressional and state legislative districts. It's also in the Constitution: Article 1, Section 2, mandates that the country conduct a count of its population once every 10 years. The 2020 Census will mark the 24th time that the country has counted its population since 1790.
WHY SHOULD YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE 2020 CENSUS COUNT?
Residents should complete the census because it is safe, easy, and important.
Safe: Your personal information is confidential, including citizenship and other sensitive data. By law, the Census Bureau cannot release any identifiable information about you, your home, or your business, even to law enforcement agencies, which is
protected under Title 13 of the U.S. Code. Disclosure of personal data is subject to fine or imprisonment.
Important: Data from the census provides the basis for annually distributing more than $675 billion in federal funds which helps fund our roads, schools, hospitals, Medicaid, and many other programs.
Easy: You can complete the census online, by phone, or by mail. You can respond in 13 different languages via phone or online.
Prince George’s County is supporting the U.S. Census Bureau’s data collection activities with a Complete Count Committee (CCC). On September 18, 2018, the Prince George’s County Council approved Council Resolution (CR-35-2018) expressing support for the establishment of the CCC. The CCC is a collaboration between the County Council, the County Executive, and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) to make all reasonable efforts to obtain an accurate count of all segments of the populations of Prince George’s County.
For more information on the 2020 Census, the County's efforts towards a successful Census count and how to get involved, visit the official Prince George's County Census 2020 web portal: http://www.pgplanning.org/4480/Prince-Georges-County-Census-2020.

Greetings District 6 Residents, Businesses and Stakeholders,

Summer, 2019 throughout Council District 6 was quite active to say the least. From annual festivals and events to community meetings and forums, community engagement was present at every level. Our State of the District was an awesome example of civic activity and advocacy in action; two important factors behind the implementation of policy and sets the goals for the quality of service we seek to deliver.
With the Council returning from recess, my colleagues and I have hit the ground running, diving into a robust legislative agenda to close out Legislative Year 2019. Our Council Sessions and committee meetings are where I invite you to stay engaged with the Council happenings by attending/viewing Council sessions every Tuesday, District Council sessions on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month and through committee meetings to learn about pending legislation at pgccouncil.us. You can sign up for the Council's weekly electronic newsletter, CouncilConnection, providing you with a weekly wrap-up of all Council activity including links to Council sessions, committee meetings and pending legislation. Regionalism At Work
Washington Post Article: Region’s Elected “We do know that housing affordability in this region is going to be a very, very difficult task.” “You can’t afford to live in San Francisco — the workforce [there] is being displaced. We don’t want to be that region.” Davis said.

Washington Business Journal Article -
Redeveloping Largo Shopping Center Aims
to be the Pike & Rose of Prince George’s

You've heard all the buzz surrounding the redevelopment of the Boulevard at the Capital Centre. The Washington Business Journal gives a sneak peek into each development phase of the project (full article is accessible here):
Owner Retail Properties of America Inc. (NYSE: RPAI), an Oak Brook, Illinois real estate investment trust, plans to convert the aging power center into a mixed-use development, with retail and a central, interactive green space that follows in the footsteps of some of the region’s buzziest retail developments: Mosaic District in Fairfax, Pike & Rose along Rockville Pike and others. They’ve also picked a name to try to boost that buzz: Carillon.
The project will kick off in the second or third quarter of this year with construction of a medical office building. RPAI is partnering with Trammell Crow in a joint venture on the office building, COO Shane Garrison told investors on the company’s first quarter earnings call.
The location makes sense for medical office, as it sits directly across from where the University of Maryland Medical System is building a new $543 million regional medical center.
In all, phase one will include four buildings: the medical office building, a 350-unit residential building, and two retail buildings, including one with a new 12-screen AMC IMAX movie theater on the second floor. There will also be a 1-acre park located in the center of those four buildings, with space for events, seating, a stage and pop-up retailers and restaurants.
Trust and believe. Carillon represents the nexus of entertainment and lifestyle complexes coming toPrince George's County. Stay tuned for updates through Experience Carillon's official newsletter!

Councilman Davis Announces
$250-Million Project In The
County, Will Be In District Six

Prince George’s County Council Member Derrick Leon Davis, in partnership with Manekin Construction hosted a briefing on the Hampton Park Project in Capitol Heights on Wednesday, July 24, 2019.
Small minority, woman or locally-owned businesses in Prince George's County were invited to attend and learn more about the Hampton Park Project in Capitol Heights and subcontractor opportunities. The project, a total of 25 acres along the MD 214 Central Avenue Corridor, entails $250 million in development, including a $35 million building for a Health and Human Services Building. The redevelopment site plan of the Hampton Mall is expected to bring in 2,200 jobs, apartment buildings, 100,000 square feet of retail and dining options, office space and a 120-150-room hotel.
“A project like Hampton Park is critical,” Davis said. “This is not something that was thought of overnight. It’s gone from the paper napkin, to the tablecloth, to the little piece of paper, with crude drawings to what we’re talking about making happen today.”

Showing Prince George's Pride Nationwide

In May, 2019, Council Member Davis was afforded the opportunity to travel with Council colleagues, Prince George's County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks and the Prince George's County Economic Development Corporation to the annual ICSC International Council of Shopping Center’s Annual Retail Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Many residents often inquire about what it takes to bring more quality retailers to our County.
|
What does that process look like? #ICSCREcon is just the place County officials visit to have those conversations. The goal is to share our story and promote the opportunities and advantages for bringing business to Prince George’s County. You'll see that the buzz around Carillon is spreading, as there was a full exhibit dedicated to the Carillon project at the Prince George's County booth.
